November 5, 2020 A Progress Report Gosh, has it been that long since I have checked in. I apologize.. My Thyroidectomy was good; the lesion was benign and I was able to keep half of my Thyroid.
The latest is that I worked full time at the Board of Elections here in Cincinnati for two months during the preparation for the election. It was super work, very fatiguing, but fun.
Now it is time to get my book published. I have a bit more self-editing to do and one scene to research and write. After that it goes to my professional editor. Then to the Formatter. Then to Amazon.

August 5, 2020 A Progress Report
Have been doing well. Am slated to have a Thyroidectomy on Friday and I plan on having 1/2 of it removed and tested to see if lesion is benign or cancerous. If cancerous, then the other half of the thyroid will need to be removed.
Have gone back to exercise at the YMCA and am grateful to have that at my disposal. Working actively on editing my book, the second one and getting close to completion.
It is hard waiting to be healthy again. But I have been doing okay.
May 30, 2020 A Progress Report
Am waiting to see the throat surgeon in June and then, no doubt, I will have surgery.
In the meantime, I am taking a course entitled Advanced Fiction Writing. My magazine writing is suspended just now, until June 1st anyway.
And I am slowly editing JOurney Toward Freedom.
April 28, 2020
Thanks to everyone who was with me as I went through my journey with Cancer. It is not over yet. I just completed three weeks of radiation. Now I will have to have surgery on my thyroid to check a lesion there and determine if it is cancerous, in which case, the entire thyroid will be removed. Then, in six months, I will have another scan on my lung, where there are a couple spots, and if they remain, then I suppose a biopsy is in order.
So I have a ways to go yet.
As you all have had to remain at home this past six weeks or so, so have I. And the time was passing slowly, despite my going once a day for radiation.
That leads me into my new book I am writing: I don’t have a title as yet, but it will be a third in a series of Journey books. This one will feature a new character, Hannah Ackers. There will be less shoot-em-up and kill-em in this book than in the previous ones but hopefully it will contain conflict and drama as the others did. I am kind of exploring at this point.
And I am busy editing the second in the series, Journey Toward Freedom.

March 21, 2020 A Progress Report
Am healing from my surgery and a date has been set to begin radiation. Note, I will have three weeks of radiation, not five as I had previously mentioned.
Now has begun the Coronavirus and everything has changed, it seems. I have been in the better part of five days. Frequent handwashing, cleaning in-house of counter tops, watching all of this crisis unfold real time on TV. I am attempting to use my time productively, remain on a loose schedule, provide for nutrition for myself and those in my household, and get sufficient rest.
Things are very worrisome but attempting to remain positive. I am taking a writing course online for a few days. And making plans to edit once again my novel in progress.
March 9, 2010 An Update
I had my surgery and fortunately, there were clear margins so I do not require a mastectomy. I go on to five weeks of radiation. But it doesn’t begin until after mid-march. I am waiting at this time. After my radiation, I will have surgery on my thyroid, which showed a lesion upon testing. I will have half of my thyroid removed and see if the site is cancerous, in which case, I would have the whole thing removed.
Working on getting back to exercise at this time. Doing a lot of reading.
Have not been working on my writing.

February 13, 2020 New News
Already into the new year and I am behind the times on writing or keeping up.
I have had some startling news. I had a mammogram that showed a suspicious area. A biopsy determined I had two calcificationss on the right side. The first surgical oncologist I went to wanted to do a bilateral mastectomy. Fortunately, I sought a second opinion and it was decided to try to do two lumpectomies on the right breast. If further testing showed clear margins than I will have five weeks of radiation. If the margins are not clear, meaning if they contain traces of cancerous material, then I will have a mastectomy.
Tuesday, Feb. 11th, I had the lumpectomies and am home recovering. I haven’t had so much time on my hands in a while and am considering beginning a new novel while on this journey.
So hang in, and I will return to my writing.
December 16, 2019 Adding to Blog
It has been quite a while since I have written on my blog; I have been distracted and busy with a diet and exercise plan. I have been working with the YMCA and their weight loss program in an effort to lose a few pounds and get better fitness and in better shape. It was a success!!!! Now the program is over and I am transitioning back to working daily on my novel. It is in the editing stage. I have been taking scenes to my writer’s support group monthly to read and get feedback. That has been going well.
I am continuing to go to the YMCA to work out daily. But I am attempting to get back full time to my writing. Toward that effort, I am taking a course soon, in December/January, on writing and keeping a blog.
I hope to pep up my blog and get a better messaging on my blog.
Anyway, I hope to write more often, perhaps twice a week or so.
Now, it is Christmas season and time to enjoy the holidays. Wishing each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

July 20, 2019 Getting Started with Promotion of Book
It haws been a busy time. Since I published my book in February, I have been taking this weight loss group at the local YMCA. I finished it in May. I lost about 20 pounds and have made an effort to change my lifestyle and my eating habits.
At the same time, I have been busy editing my book though this has been largely forestalled by the weight loss group and then after that by the Live Strong Group that I have been in. It was a cancer survivor exercise group also at the Y and was quite rigorous.
But all told, I have done some editing of my current book, Journey Toward Freedom, and am taking my time doing so.
Now, I have begun promoting my first book. I just ordered a supply of copies of new copies of the first book, Journey Toward Healing, and am awaiting delivery. In the meantime, I have assembled a packet of information, a one page with a phtoto and all the facts about selling my book and giving a lecture on a health topic. That is my current plan: to go to retirement centers and nursing homes and give a lecture of healthy habits of living and promote my book at the same time.
I also have plans to set up a table at some businesses and sell from the floor.. I’ll let you know how it goes in a few weeks.
May 9, 2019 Getting Started Once Again
It has been a busy time taking a Weight loss Group at the YMCA and then, before it was finished, beginning a Livestrong Program for Cancer Survivors. The weight loss group has ended but hopefully not the effort toward loss of weight and getting going on my Diabetic Diet.
Now I am in a program for cancer survivors at the Y entitled Livestrong. An exercise program, it is designed to sharpen our skill at exercise, weight lifting, doing floor exercises and aerobics.
I am not good at getting down on the floor but in my first class on floor exercises I did just that. Hopefully I will get more limber and flexible and more ready to do all aspects of the exercise program.
i have been diverted from my focus on writing and am now set to recapture that effort.
Hopefully I am able to combine the Livestrong Program with a steady active effort at writing.

April 24, 2019 Back to Work
It was a nice interval, having a book launch and selling my book. Now it is back to work, editing the second book, Journey Toward Freedom. My first book, Journey Toward Healing is unfortunately not selling on Amazon. I am told there are many many first time writers.
I will be continuing to advertise the first book while I work on the second. I have a good start and have taken some of the first half of the scenes to my Writers’ Support Group for a critique.
My goal of staying current on Facebook has not been easy and I must say I have not done it but I have every intention of getting better at it.
Wanting to put my book on consignment at a couple bookstores in the city.
April 10, 2019 Looking Toward Summer
I have been working on my editing of the second novel and have continued to be busy with the weight loss group I am participating in. I haven’t had the money to continue advertising of the first book but hope to in the future. My editing is progressing but I want to take many of the scenes to my Writers’ Group so it will take time before I am ready to publish. Plus I have to get the money together.
March 25, 2019 A Busy Week
The weeks are speeding by since my book launch and each week it seems to get busier. I am taking a weight loss group at the Y that calls for recording of my food and its nutritional values and that is time consuming plus the class is twice a week for two hours.
I only began editing my second book this morning and haven’t gotten very far. I am committed to getting up early and working on it for a couple hours each morning.
I have lost weight with the weight-loss group but find I am cheating a bit. On Friday, I was four pounds down from what I had been but I have put back on 1.4 pound of that.
It takes a bit of planning too, to have a low-cal lo fat meal each evening. This last week we had vegetable soup and I love it when serving that, it makes for a nice showing on the scales.
March 18, 2019 A Fall from Grace?
I fell this morning, early, about 1:45 a.m. as I entered my bathroom and slipped on the new rug I had purchased only yesterday. I fell into the shower door, busted the door, hit my head, scraped my hands but no serious injuries occurred. I am fortunate: A friend of mine fell recently and fractured her pelvis, had a stay in a nursing home, and is recovering at home with daily physical therapy and remains a shut at this time.
Certainly falls are nothing to take lightly. Protecting the elderly by safety bars in the bathroom, taking up scatter rugs from the floors, avoiding spills on the floor, anything to keep safety a priority is in order.
I am still able to write, and I am grateful for that freedom.
March 15, 2019 Remembering Our Friends
Even though I have been focused primarily on my writing and publishing these past few months, I came to the conclusion this week that I cannot forget friends, family, and neighbors. For a long time, I have been putting off visits, thinking less and less about my relationships. I was reminded of that so much this week with an increase in funerals in our parish.
I went to visit a shut-in friend who fell a couple of months ago and fractured a bone and has been forced to limit her activity. She was in a nursing home after a brief hospital stay but is now home and has a room on the first floor for a bedroom and sitting room. She is being courageous and long-suffering and I admire her. She is hopeful of more activity soon. Indeed she is wanting to go to a luncheon and speaker this week and wants me to take her,which I am glad to do .
It all just is a reminder that even though we writers are alone a lot and focused necessarily on our writing, it does not mean we can give up our responsibility, our privilege of being a friend and family member.
And, too, even though I am on a strict diet, that does not mean that I cannot ease up on that aspect of living, and enjoy a delicious meal out at a restaurant from time to time. It was a birthday celebration this week and I went to Ruby Tuesday’s with my companion and a friend and had a splendid dinner of salad (with all the salad bar had to offer), a half order of mashed potatoes and chicken in bourbon sauce, and for desert, a small offering of a key lime desert with topping. Ahh, it was delightful. And the company was perfect.
It was back to basics this morning as I went to Mass where afterwards was donuts and coffee. I passed on that and came home. I did not even stop to visit as I knew if I did, I was likely to imbibe. Next time, I will try to remain a while for talking and sharing.
So hug your child, give a little extra attention to your husband and don’t forget the shut in down the street.
March 10, 2019 Continuing to Market
I have reduced the price of the print book to $10.00 for five days but unfortunately it hasn’t been adequately advertised yet. And, boo hoo, the book is not selling well. My friend tells me there are quite a number of first time authors with e-books on Amazon and that may account for some of it.
I don’t know what to do to keep attention on the book. I have an ad with Goodreads but it would help if I interacted on that site. Maybe I will.
March 4, 2019 A Lesson on Facebook
The head of my Writers’ Group, Wendy, and I, go to a working brunch once a month or so. This morning, Wendy spent the the entire time educating me about Facebook.
It turns out I have four or five sites and am not on all of them myself. It is so mixed up.I have someone from Fiverr assisting me with Social Media so I will get with him and see if we are able to clear it up.
Facebook returned the money for three of the advertisements I didn’t know I had. That was wonderful and I am thankful to them.
March 2, 2019 Faith-restored
My complaint to Facebook was taken to heart and a refund given, thanks Facebook for your prompt action on my behalf.
And my page is disorganized on Facebook and someone tells me I have three pages so I am going to “clean it up,” My friend, Wendy, head of my Writer’s Support Group and I are meeting for a working-brunch on Monday and taking care of it. What is not done by us, will be done by my Fiverr person, Imran next week. So things should take on a whole new perspective. And perhaps I will learn a little how to use Facebook as I admit I do not know how at this time.
I have also had an ad on Goodreads but I suspect I need to do more for that site than just place an ad and I am headed there today (Saturday). And today I am continuing to organize anew my office and attend to the many piles. Do you have piles? If so, join with me now in getting them taken care of, it is time to do just that.
I haven’t sold many books and surprisingly, only one e-book. That is a bit daunting. I have advertised now for two weeks on Facebook and Goodreads but nothing so far to speak of. Perhaps people are not interested in a “Catholic” story.
February 26, 2019 Warning about advertising
It is important when marketing to get the ‘lay of the land’ before jumping in with both feet and writing and paying for ads. I have found out the hard way. I placed two ads on Facebook, only to find out some five days later, that I had five ads out there and was being charged for all of them. My budget for advertising was wrecked and I had no more money for further ad placement.. I have been attempting to communicate with Facebook ever since and FINALLY tonight, I was able to send therm an acccurate communique of the problem. I hope that starts the ball rolling to resolve the issue.
I like the two ads I placed that were part of the original group. They got good feedback as well. But nothing is budging my AMazon account. I am told there are a million new writers with first time books and my best friend indicated I was “Spending too much money with no real chance of getting it back.” I told her that writers write (and publish). I could have done without her feedback.
What do you think? Is it worth the blood, sweat, and tears of writing, writing, rewriting, editing and editing some more. I explained on my Author Learning Center editorial tonight that I have spent about $1800.00 to write, edit and publish my book. And no viable way to recoup that money unless people begin buying. I am doing my part: I am advertising, marketing as it is called. And the Biblical imperative, “sew and you will reap” got me through a lot of writing and it is now I suppose getting me through this as well. And as someone said on Author Learning Center tonight, write and if it is meant toi be out there, the money will come. I kind of believe that as it happened with this book.

February 20, 2019 A new effort
I don’t know if I have shared with you or not but I am signed up in a weight loss group at the YMCA and have lost a few pounds in the last six weeks. It goes until sometime in April. I am hoping to retake it but I don’t know if it will be re-offered or not. It is amazing how it is going. I am getting my exercise in two times a day and that makes it easier to get in enough time. And, while I have had limited time to cook, I have attempted some low calorie, low fat meals.
Maybe I will include a few recipes here too.

It was a heady day today, good for the ego I suppose. So many questions as to why I began writing, why i wrote a book, statements like:”I never knew a writer before.: It was quite a lift. I sold a book, had my book announced to the group, and just generally my writing was the topic of interest.
February 18, 2019 A memorial day
Date of my deceased sister’s birthday today. Miss her still She was a wonderful sister. She supported me through a lot.
I am enrolled in a weight loss group at the local YMCA and doing reasonably well with it. It is a lot to keep up on, between marketing my book and working on the weight loss. I have seen progress though and that counts!!!
The weight loss group consists of mainly middle-age and seniors, two men and about ten women. We meet on Tuesday and Friday afternoons and the first half is devoted to didactic about food and nutrition and the second half we go to the work-out room and a very ambitious exercise routine. I am adding to that by going most mornings to the Y at 6 a.m. and working out about 45 to 50 minutes and then back in the afternoon some days as well.
/The food is more of a struggle for me but thus far it hasn’t felt like a diet.

I have signed up for ads on Facebook and Goodreads. And sought an account on Bookbub. Thus far my ads are reaching more people but not with much success at buying. Hopefully that will change.
There are also more expensive ways to promote such as on Book Buzz. I am planning on that in the future.
February 16, 2019 Reviews
I have received several reviews the past few days: One is from Henry Marchand, and he writes: This novel about two courageous sisters, Benedicta and Brie, held my rapt attention and interest as the story unfolded–a story of love, mystery and redemption. The author is to be commended for weaving as many essential parts of the novel together in an intriguing and fascinating manner.
Another review came from Joseph Carrico: I genuinely enjoyed reading this book. The characters are well developed and the story is gripping. The story gives an insight into the struggle of mental illness and hope that it can be overcome. It is well worth the read.

February 15, 2019 Advantages to Self Publishing
It is one thing to write a book and it is another to write a book that sells. And never mind how difficult it is to find a good agent and/or be accepted by a traditional publisher.
So I am suggesting self publishing and adding what I see as some advantages of self publishing:
- Takes less time. May have book out there sooner
- Cost is less today than ever before. And the quality can be amazing.
- Hard to tell a book published by a traditional publisher from a self-published book
- Easier to navigate the system. Books can be published without the inevitable wait which occurs when working with a traditional publisher
- Control is all in your hands
- Name your own price, choose your own cover, title it as you wish, things you won’t get with a traditional publisher.
I self published mine and it is not too difficult a process nor very expensive.
And I have a request: If you have read my book, please send in a review to Amazon

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you. I hope this is a special day for each of you. I will be celebrating with a special supper with my suite mate this evening. No flowers or candy. Too calorific or expensive but we will express valentine greetings and a gift nevertheless.

February 13, 2019 Post Launch Info
I had an amazing day!! The book launch was successful, everything went smoothly, there was a large gathering and I sold a considerable number of books. The door prizes were a hit, especially the grand prize which was a framed picture of what is seen in space through the Hubble telescope.
Friends and family brought extra food for the refreshment table and what started out as being a sheet cake, cupcakes and cookies, turned into a feast with cheese and crackers, a veggie tray and a fruit bowl.
I gave a brief presentation regarding the book, then took questions. Many of them concerned how I began writing and what led to my writing a book.
As I told the group, I had always wanted to write. I was editor of my school paper in high school but then went into the sciences, in nursing and left writing to my journal entries.
Anyway, it could not have gone better.

February 4, 2019 It is published!!!!
On January 31, 2019 I published the paperback edition of my book on Amazon. On February 3, 2019 that was joined by the e-book edition. So now my book is in the store at Amazon and soon it will be sold in stores as well. It has taken a lot to get all of this accomplished. I must say, it is a work in progress.
The feedback has been amazing. I have heard from those who have read the book thus far and gotten a lot of positive comments. Thanks to all who have taken the time to read my book and comment on it. I received the books in the mail on Sunday for the book launch, a whole box of them. And they look good. The paperback is $12.99 on Amazon and soon also in bookstores but I don’t think the bookstores will carry it in their store, I believe you must order it from them and wait for it to come in.
There will be a Gala Book Launch on February 9, 2019 at the Mt. Washington Recreation Center 1715 Beacon St. from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Door prizes will be offered along with refreshments and a reading from the book. Register at email@example.com the first 15 registrants will receive a gift.
I am busy getting ready for the event.

January 28, 2019 Getting Set to Publish
Just completed the ISBN purchase and email to the formatter, Nick.
I have emailed invitations to all the church members for whom I have email addresses and I snail mailed a couple of invitations to friends without email.
Now waiting for formatter to make final corrections on print book.
January 25, 2019 Getting Set to Publish
Things are coming down to the wire, deadlines are looming, and last minute preparations are underway for the publishing of my novel. I just made the last of the corrections to my print book this morning and sent them in.
I am kind of hopeful of getting the print book sent in a day or two early but the publication date remains Feb. 1, 2019.
I am warned that a trial run is needed to make sure the cover does not bleed. I don’t have time to make a trial run however. So, I am crossing my fingers and saying a prayer.
I have sent out personal invitations to friends and family and done what I am able to advertise the book launch. It appeared in the Enquirer and I have some fliers around.
January 21, 2019 Close to the wire: publication
Over the weekend, I typed out the latest set of corrections on the e-book. And Mike, my housemate, made the corrections on the print book. And time is getting short and there remains things to do before publication date. It is becoming exciting though.
One problem is where to advertise for the book launch. The library has a policy against posting such notices. I am doing what I can posting at churches in the surrounding areas. I am looking into advertisement p;aid.

It is getting down to the wire and there are still things ot do but I am managing. I am almost finished making corrections on the print book and the e-book. Looking for volunteers to read an advanced reader copy and write a review for Amazon.
January 16,2019 Preparation for Publishing
it is an exciting time. Everyday I learn something new, and there are new things to do, new plans to be made and implemented. I have had to apply for an ISBN, fill out a form for Amazon, apply for a copyright on my written material, make corrections on my book.
And of course, make out descriptions of my book. And now, I am going to try to find the advertisement I want to buy for my book.
I am also planning to go to the library to Makespace and see what I am able to create to advertise. It is a department at the public library and offers assistance to do special things,to create stuff, banners, bookmarks, posters, even more.
Today I went to a working brunch with the head of my writer’s group.
January 10, 2019 Preparation to Publish
Made final preparations to publish on Amazon today. I consulted a publishing expert, Cathy Fyock, and decided to do KDP Select, which means that I will publish only with Amazon for 90 days. I think that is for e-books only—I must check that out.
I also got on go-daddy today and got myself a domain name. It is Best Books 101.
I also found out that the ein that I have already will be the ein I use for Omega One Press. I will see about a bank account for my new business.
I am thinking of pushing up my publishing date to around January 21, 2019 if I can get everything ready by then.
And I just discovered that it is I who send in the print book to be published by Amazon. I didn’t know that.
As I said, I worked hard today.
January 9, 2019 Preparations Underway
I am in the process of applying for a copyright for my book. There are papers to file and money to pay for it. And I am getting the info ready for the formatting team to send to KDP. They require a account with KDP, tax info, and also info about how to set up the book.
Beyond that, I will be inquiring of the radio and TV stations if they could advertise or do an interview about the book. An article came out in the Cincinnati Enquirer on January 3, 2019 about the book and author.
Also expecting to do some advertising though I am uncertain just how I will go about such an effort. Perhaps in Facebook, on Liknkedin, something like that.
January 6, 2019 New Activities
I taught a class yesterday on Introduction to Writing. It was s/w shortened as the only participant did not get there until late. But it happened and it was pretty good.
Now I am signed up on Amazon for tax purposes and an account in which to get paid. That took a lot out of me to set up those things.
Now I am looking to seeing about reviews, advertising, contacting the state about my application to set up a publishing company. I did that last Monday but haven’t heard anything from the state. Nor have my checks been cashed.
January 2, 2019 Serious prep for publishing
I have been doing some serious preparation for the publishing of my book in Feb. I needed to get a PDF of my book to the media release I have written, plus a copy of the cover for that also. And I needed to get the ISBN and barcode from Bowker to the company doing the formatting. Easier said than done. But with some help, it was accomplished today.
I am having some good days and some bad days!!! On good days, what I plan goes reasonably well, and flows but on bad days, just hang it up, why don’t you.
It has been like that for a week or so. I tried to do ads and ran into the complexity of the situation. I still haven’t figured that out yet. I tried to buy my ISBN and didn’t know how. I did get that underway after a few days of floundering.
Now I am wondering whether to spend $100.00 on software to be able to send PDF’s.
I have a working budget but that money is going fast.
December 27, 2018 Two Days after Christmas
I had a lovely Christmas. On Christmas eve, went, in my shiny new duds, to 3 p.m. Mass and took up the collection because there were no ushers. I opened gifts with Mike after dinner. Mike went to mid-night Mass but I remained home, went to bed. On Christmas morning, I went to 9 a.m. Mass, then to a brunch at Elaine’s in which her son cooked. The omelets were delicious!! Then it was on to Anchorage and to the family shin-dig. I really enjoyed but there wasn’t enough time. I ate and ran. We went then to see Mike’s brother and his wife. Then it was time to return home. It was a nice day, really nice.

December 25, 2018 Wishing a Merry Christmas
I have traded writing professionally for writing a Christmas letter to family and friends. Today is the day; I received a computer and a tall statue of an angel with a horn and a lamp for Christmas. I gave Christmas to Mike and I have gifts for Mary Sue and Cathy.

December 22, 2018 Progress
I am now in the corrections phase of publishing my book. It has been formatted but is found to have any number of corrections to be made. I am about the business of assembling an email list both for my Christmas Letter and for invitations to the book launching in February. And I have a class coming up on January 5, 2018 at Anderson Public Library from 12 noon to 3 p.m. It is called An Introduction to Writing.
It is coming down to the wire now on plans and carrying out those plans. The next order of business is planning and setting up advertising. I do not know much about this.
I will also go to the library to the create space and work on a couple banners and some bookmarks for advertisement.
December 16, 2018 Preparation for Christmas
I received as a gift, a new computer for Christmas. But it was not the best time to take time out of my schedule to transfer data and get all the kinks ironed out. I am working on it but it is iffy. But I do appreciate the new computer. I needed it as mine was getting quite old. i have not done the first thing to prepare for Christmas. I did buy my housemate his Christmas gifts and a few for friends but no written cards, no plans made for Christmas. Thankfully I am invited to Jennifer and Tony’s for Christmas lunch. I am pleased to meet with family; it has been a whole year since I have seen anyone.
So, right now, this minute, I am wishing all who read my blog a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.
And I have a week to go so I may be ready.

December 7, 2018 Progress in the Making
i had fun today. I shopped for 15 small gifts for the first 15 registrants to my invitation for the book launching. And I made up the invitation on my computer.
now I am off of Facebook for some reason and I signed up with a second email address. I hope to get this squared away shortly.
I am in need of a room at the Anderson branch for a class and I have not heard if I am approved yet or not.
I have to write two hours of the three hours of lecture and plan activities.
I am hopeful of making the book launch a fun time.

December 6, 2018 Progress in the Making
I have gone over the manuscript once it was in e-book form and made what were the corrections. Now I am waiting for the corrections to be made. And I have talked with the cover artist, Nelly, a woman from Hungary, who will be doing the cover art for me. I am excited to get this far along and soon to see the proposals she has for the cover.
I talked to someone about listing myself as the publisher and that is okay if I go to the trouble of assuming ownership and getting it squared away. I don’t know if I’ll do that or not. I may look into what it means for me to do year-round.
November 24, 2018 Progress in the Making
I would like to let you in on a secret: It takes a lot of work to write and publish a book. I have just managed to get the entire book, including the copyright, acknowledgments, title page and thank you to the reader page along with the manuscript itself to the company that will do the formatting for me. I have had piles of notes on the marketing and publishing of a novel on my desk for months it seems. Now I am making progress of sorts. The book is with the formatter. The book is with them now. I look forward to seeing it next in formatted form with cover art.
I have also written the first hour of a talk I am giving on Introduction to Writing, scheduled for January 5, 2019, hopefully at the Anderson Public Library from 12 noon to 3 p.m.
I hope all had a Happy Thanksgiving. The holidays are upon us. I am hopeful of having a meaningful Advent season and a good Christmas, both for myself and my housemate. I may have a new job: I have applied for work with Comfort Keepers, a non-medical home health agency. I am hopeful of being accepted for work with them. It would go far in giving me the extra money I need for writing.
Today I wrote next month’s article for Health & Wellness Magazine. it too is a labor of love.
November 19, 2018 Publishing
I have decided to teach a class in early January. An “Introduction to Writing” class, hopefully at the Anderson Public Library. I am excited about doing the class, hopefully someone will come. I will be there!!
I have put together the plans for the book launch. I will have it February 9, 2019 at the Mt.Washington Community Center. Plans are underway. It is top secret at this point.
I must get together an email list. I have none and that is entirely pitiful.

To balance out what I am doing in preparation for my book: the launch and all, I planning to give a two-hour talk on Introduction to Writing sometime in the next several months. I will go over the basics of magazine writing, writing a novel with a word or two about memoir and essay. Looking forward to it.

October 27, 2018 Preparing a book for publication
As a first time author of a book and hopefully soon to be published, I am a bit nervous about the marketing and getting my book out there and recognized. I have been so anxious in fact, that I have sat down and reflected on what to do to relieve my considerable angst. And what came was: Teach a class to others about writing, or something about medicine, maybe.
Toward that end, I am tentatively putting together a day of writing. The title is simply “About Writing.” I am working on the bubble method to brainstorm content. I am happily joined in this endeavor by the previous work of Cathy Fyock. She is a non-fiction writer and distributor of books, and has instructed on Author Learning Center.
I am following her lead; she has given several hours of instruction on video that I have watched and she is a credible speaker. I take great pleasure in working with her in mind. .
With the intent of the planning of the course for others, I find that my anxiety has continued but is milder. I am reaching out to fellow writers for help along the way.
It is a simple concept: When feeling angst over a project, think of some way to help others and that angst will be reduced. I find that to be true.
October 24, 2018 Preparing a book for publication
There is a LOT that goes into a plan for publishing and marketing of a new book. First off, the book must be professionally edited; corrections must be made; the book must be advertised before it is published to let people know who you are and what you are selling. I have just learned the process whereby someone advertises on Facebook (It is rather complicated.) And there are agencies that for some funding, will seek to advertise your book. I am hooking up with one such agency and perhaps advertising for a few days, around the time my book is published, on Facebook.
It is a good idea to make up some posters and book marks or postcards with the advertisement on them. I am planning to go to the Public Library to their Create section for help with that.
I am planning a launching party on February 9, 2018 and I am looking for corporations with whom to partner in providing for the party, you know, door prizes, food, beauty bags, stuff like that. Now I am thinking I will have the launching party a week after the release of the book in order to sell books at the signing and party.
And my awkwardness with soical media and tech stuff does not help me to promote my book. If you have any suggestions, I would be delighted to hear them.

October 17, 2018 My plans for publishing
I continue to read the book I mentioned October 13th: “Get Known Before the Book Deal,” and I am advised to think carefully about what I want as my topic/niche before announcing it to the public. Katz advises seeking feedback from some experts in the field like editors and agents and other writers.
Toward that end, I am giving careful consideration to niche.
I would like a niche that is generally positive: perhaps spiritual and emotional well-being and good mental health. What do you think? I am open to suggestion.
October 13, 2018 Working on Publishing
There is a lot that goes into publishing a book besides writing the book. The book must be self-edited, then a thorough editing by a professional editor. That is basic. When it comes time to prepare for publishing, a marketing campaign is essential. This entails writing a pitch, a bio, a one page, a media kit with a media release, and the material that goes on the back cover of the book.
Then, sharing your story on social media such as facebook, where it is hoped, you have been relating for sometime. Then notifying radio and TV, hopeful that some of the local stations will plug your book and/or interview you.
Making bookmarks and posters and passing them out may be one thing to do. Getting up to date on all social media sites as well is another task.
But there is still more to the process: I am reading an excellent book for writers, entitled, “Get Known Before the Book Deal,” and it is a no-nonsense approach to acquiring readers, gathering a tribe of followers who will be willing to purchase your book, well before you put pen to paper
Her advice is to develop a niche, a specialty, something to write about that the writer becomes knowledgeable about and that readers will find credible. And then, to write articles, teach classes, volunteer, get known for your work with this group or topic. And then, when you write your book, include some teaching about that topic.
Needless to say, I would have profited from reading this book several years earlier, before I had written my first book.
Nevertheless, I have attempted already to create something of a niche both with my topic of spirituality and my topic of emotional mental illness. And this book affirms that effort and gives me the impetus to build upon those niches.
As you know, I am an RN, I worked in the area of mental health. I have experience in that field. I also am a mental health consumer myself, so I have somewhat of a dual perspective on the topic. I am able to relate as a fellow sufferer and as an expert on the topic of mental health.

I had the pleasure yesterday of having a 30 minute session with author, AG Billig. AG Billig, Andreea, is the author of a best selling book, I Choose Love. Andreea is supporting me in my effort to publish my book. She has offered to help me make a video as an advertisement for my book and more. I am encouraged by her offer of help.
I have written my media kit, my bio, and one page. I will be sending my media kit to local radio stations.

I have an appointment online to discuss social media and writing with author, AG Billig today. I am looking forward to meeting her and gleaning some valuable information.
I am finalizing my press kit, including my press release, my bio, first page, and the information on the back cover of my book. It is exciting and at the same time, daunting.
September 29, 2018 Preparation for Publishing
I have been editing and going over my paper work I am using for the publishing of my novel. I am working on a press kit with a press release, a one page, a bio, and I have written what will go on the back cover of the book. I have written a story for Forest Hills Journal. Next week I send my press release with the press kit to the local radio and TV stations.
I also want to apply for a Kirkus review and/or other reviews that are available before the book is published. I must do this soon, as they want about five months lag time.
I am not sure if I am prepared for sending out manuscripts to reviewers: they want a pre-copy of the book and I do not have that. I am going to check on this.
I have a strategy session coming up with Cathy Fyock on October 8th and another planning session with AG Billig on October 4th. I am hopeful these two sessions will help me and clarify some things for me.
September 20, 2018 Information about Publishing
I have completed the writing, editing and second editing on my first novel, “Journey Toward Healing,” I am now in the marketing phase. I plan on contacting radio stations in the area to see if I could possibly be interviewed.
I plan on advertising some, on Facebook, in a local newspaper, Forest HIlls Journal, and on my web site. I have set up a time for the use of a private room at Anderson Public Library scheduled tentatively for February 13, 2018.
The book will be ready before then, but I plan on doing some marketing before the book comes out. I would also like to apply for a Kirkus review.
The book will cost in the neighborhood of $850.00 plus the cost of the professional editor I used. I must have it formatted and a cover art provided.
There are other ways to self-publish but this is the simplest and the most cost-efficient. Other ways of self publishing are to go with a publishing company and paying them to print, distribute and advertise your book. Okay, you still have to do some advertising yourself.

I am in the process now of publishing my book for certain. I purchased the ISBN numbers yesterday. I have been in touch with a company, that for a reasonable amount will format the work. And I contacted an artist who will get together a cover art for my book.
The dispute I raised at the bank was able to give me back the money I paid Westbow and in which I was unwilling to publish with them.
Now I am ready with the money for publishing with Amazon.
The downside is that the book will not be in bookstores but instead, will be on Amazon both in book form and as an ebook.
And it will be time for me to work on marketing.
August 22, 2018 Efforts to Publish my Book
I have been making progress on getting the final edits done on my novel but it has been an arduous task and very detail oriented. I have someone making a final read-through of the book this week.
I have heard nothing from Westbow about returning all or a part of the funds I have paid them. I am told others have similar experiences with self publishers. This is indeed a learning experience and a hard learning at that.
If I could do it all over again, i would simply go with Amazon to begin with. My experience with a self publishing company is that they offer very little in the way of royalties and charge for everything.
August 14, 2018 Efforts to Publish My Book
It has been awhile since I have added a message here and I apologize that it has been so long. I have been quite involved with efforts to publish my first book, Journey Toward Healing. Actually I thought I was all set: I had selected a self publisher, Westbow Press and was into the process of getting my book to them, etc. Then they surprised me when the evaluation team came back with all sorts of changes they wanted to the book, changes I was unprepared to make. And they were not necessarily changes to make the book a better one but changes to fit their criterion of what was supposed to be in a religious book. I was floored. And I could not go with them as the publisher. I was sorry to lose that choice but it would not work out. Now, with not too much patience, I am waiting for them to refund part of my money.
And I am afraid that is taking more time than I like.
They have not been forthcoming and I am displeased with their process.
Thus far, I am still in the situation of making the final edits to the manuscript and getting an artist to do the cover. I am going to go with publishing on Amazon. I have found that that is probably the best alternative for my needs.
August 2, 2018 Progress on the Book
I informed you in a previous note that my book was being reviewed by Westbow Pres but because of their policy of omitting all violence, sex, and gore, which they felt was in my book, and which I find was too restrictive and I did not want to rewrite or change, I have decided to go with Amazon as the publisher.
Therefore, my book will most likely be published by Amazon as a print book and e-book.
I am looking forward to that day it will be submitted to them for publication. Thank you
July 28, 2018 An interview with writer Paige Strickland
In a question and answer interview with writer and memoir writer, Paige Strickland, Paige talked about her two books of memoir, the first, Akin to the Truth and the second, After the Truth. The topic for both books of memoir is her take on being an adoptee. The first book concerns growing up in the 60’s -80’s as an adoptee and the making of her decision to search for and connect with her birth family in 1987-88. The second book is about being an adopted adult in reunion with her birth family and the ways in which that has impacted her life, her marriage, friendships and parenting.
The purpose of the first book was in answer to the questions posed by her children about just who was who. It was written just after her father’s birth family reached out to her and would have been in 2002. It took until 2012-2013 to name the themes which were: identity, loss and the father-daughter relationship and then to prepare the book for publication.
The second book came out of a short-story begun in 2009 even before the publishing of the first book. The second book was completed in 2016 and went to print in 2017.
Paige had become aware of more and more adoptees “coming out,” about their being adopted and wanting to find their biological roots. Paige saw her book as a way to relate with other adopted individuals.
Paige explains that her book is an answer to the questions of adopted persons who lead a secret life: the person they could have been in a family as opposed to the public life, that of the family they were adopted into.
Paige points out that in other major life changing events, the individual prepares beforehand. Why would you not want to prepare for this life-changing event as well, she wants to know. Reading about the topic allows for preparation.
Paige published on Amazon and Kindle. Her husband is the creator of the format and has the tech-savy, states Paige.
The cover went through a 99 Designs creative artist.
Paige comments that she is marketing this summer by getting reviews, staying active on Facebook and her social media adoptee site,
November is Adoption Awareness Month explains Paige and she attempts to post on Facebook and adoption sites heavily during this month.

July 27, 2018 Progress on Publishing of my Book
In case I haven’t made it clear, my book is now being evaluated by Westbow Press for publishing. The actual manuscript is receiving its final edits from my professional editor and then will go to someone to format before being submitted to Westbow.
I feel so fortunate to have a reputable publishing company to work with. I considered submitting it to Amazon but I am a novice at artwork and such and felt I would be better represented by a publisher.
I will keep you posted on my progress. I am just now laying out what is to go on the back page as well as my bio on the book.
July 16, 2018 Progress on Publishing of my book
I have made last edits to my first book, Journey Toward Healing. It is now in the hands of the professional editor for her last and final edits. Then it goes to Westbow for a
book evaluation. If all is well after that, I am having my book formatted by an agency, then it is off to Westbow for publication.
I am thankful for all those who have supported me in the writing of this book, for my writer’s group who listened and critiqued each major scene, to those who read for me.

July 4, 2018 Progress on the Journey of :Pu blishing
Good news!! I am now almost ready to publish my first book, Journey Toward Healing. It is edited and checked for errors not once but several times. I just need to amend the italics now as they are a bit screwed up.
I know, I think, how I am going to publish my book, and in the days to follow I will be more specific about how and when and with whom. Needless to say, I am very excited about this progress toward publishing.

June 25 208 The First Draft of My Book
I have the first draft of my second novel. I would love readers for it. Please let me know if you can. Thank you.
It is a sequel to my first work, Journey Toward Healing,and I must get it in shape along with the first one.
I have just added some of the final scenes to the second novel. It has about 73, 400 words, hoping for about 80,000 but I’ll take 75,000 if need be. Wanting some volunteer readers now. My best reader has quit on me. Too much going on in her family.
But I need readers who will be vocal about what they think, both positive and negative, about the book. Two people who read my first novel, would not make comments about it. That was not good. It didn’t help me much and actually led to all sorts of ruminations.
May 23, 2018 Writing the Best Book You Can Write
I am int the writing of my second fiction book, and it definitely is written better than my first. Not necessarily the grammar, but the way it is written is more engaging and hopefully more interesting to the reader.
Because of that, I am CONSIDERING holding off on the publishing of my second book and, before I publish my first, which has not as yet been published, I am going to redo or think about redoing my first book, make major editing changes to that book.
I know that the book has merit, but it is not the best it could be and because of that, I may want to consider making changes to it while I am able to do so.
May 15, 2018 Writing Effectively: Showing vs. Telling
If ever there is a concept important to the writer of a novel, it is the one about being able to show rather than tell. In recent years, the emphasis has been on showing how the character feels, what makes him tick, what he is likely to do.
As a writer, I am conscious of using show vs. tell in the sharing of a story. Not everyone is good at showing, it is tricky sometimes to find a way to show in place of telling.
But for everyone who reads, the stage is set in a most effective way by showing.
May 11, 2018 Small Changes Make a Difference
Some little things mean a lot, and when you are working on keeping your blood sugar numbers stable, little things help a lot. Some of these changes include:
- Taking an after-dinner stroll
- Flossing your teeth at least once a day
- Lifting weights at least twice a week
- Taking a few minutes a couple times a day to relax
- Finding some one to talk to when stressed
- Eating more nuts
- Going for a swim
- Eating more cinnamon and cloves
- Getting in enough shuteye

May 9, 2018 Finding Obstacles
Finding obstacles is often more than an excuse. There are actually events and problems that occur to take you away from writing over a span of time.That has just happened to me: an illness with a loved one, a scheduled cataract surgery for that same person, and a day at the voting precinct to act as a paid officer for voting. It all was stressful and compounded by my own health issue of difficulty with my eyes. But I survived and will be back to writing soon enough.

I have gotten slowed down on my writing of my novel by personal concerns and business. I have about 73,000 words but I find I must go back and edit some to include more consistent scene/sequel writing.
My goal is to reach 80,000 words. Wish me luck.
April 28, 2018 Publishing and Marketing
I spent the early morning hours with an interesting goal in mind: Learn everything I could about publishing and marketing. I had a familiar face to listen to, that is, Amy Collins, writer, speaker and sales consultant, owner of New Shelves Books.
Her work is a veritable gold mine of information for the newbie and the veteran writer alike. In a video I listened to this morning: The Five Pillars of Marketing and Sales for Authors–recorded webinar on Author Learning Center website, I was given a lot of info that I find very useful and user friendly.
And if that is not enough, she has written a book, “The Write Way,” Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Publishing, Selling, and Marketing Your Book.
As Jeffrey Blount, NBC News Director and author of Hating Heidi Foster, said: “Amy is straightforward, concise, fearless and quite funny. Her wealth of knowledge is immediately impressive as she is able to lay out before you the world of independent publishing in a clear manner.
So if you are writing a book, and want to self publish, even if you just want to get your book on Amazon or to be published on Amazon, this is the info you need.

April 27, 2018 Another Day
It is not getting done. I am not able to achieve my goal of getting my blood sugar levels down to normal with the diet I am eating. Yesterday, due to other factors, I was unable to go to exercise. I did do without ice cream after supper and I have baked fish for dinner, a sure winner, but my meal also contained a salad loaded with condiments as well as two other carbs. A recipe for disaster. My blood sugar two hours later was just what you would expect: in the 200;s.
I am demoralized. On the one hand I see the way ahead: shape up, get a grip on it, get the dinner meal down to 45gm to 65gm. of cho, no more. Do it consistently. Keep up the exercise.
I am, if truth were told, I am getting more exercise. The day before I got in a fifteen minute sprint with an exercise group for an all out aerobics effort, followed by 25 minutes on the bike and a five minutes doing weights. A total of about 45 minutes. Some progress I suppose.
April 25, 2018 A Progress Report
It hasn’t been so steady the last few days; I have had a hectic schedule, my food budget is gone for the month, and i had a few days I didn’t make it to the Y. Today I did get there: I did biking, weights and participated in exercise group session. It sounds like more than I actually did thought: It was about 40 minutes of working out.
I have been super busy writing on my novel. And I am going to work at the polls for election day. I went to practice today. I lost a temporary crown eating supper and have had a hectic time trying to get it reseated ( a long story).
I am planning another healthy supper tonight of zuccini.
April 20, 2018 A Progress Report
Yesterday was the second full day since I got the news about my eyes and began a ‘sensible’ eating plan. For three days I have exercised more, the last two days I have gotten in an hour of exercise each day. Last night, I had a delicious meal again; it rivaled the zuccini dinner for taste and low carbohydrate count.
I prepared what was left in the fridge: romaine lettuce already wilting but I took off the ends and it was edible, even delicious. I added some condiments off the salad bar at Krogers, chopped onion, mushrooms, chopped pickles, olives, and ranch style salad dressings It was excellent, superb, magnifique.
I don’t really know what my blood sugar was afterwards. I would have liked to have measured it but did not. Anyway, my weight on the fourth morning was down five or more pounds. Yay for my team!!!
I am waiting on body measurements as I would like to see a loss of inches when I do measure, thus I am waiting.

April 18, 2018 A New Weight Loss Plan
I am switching focus to the diabetic and a stable blood sugar and a chance at weight loss.
Yesterday was my day to meet with my eye doctor. He measured the pressures in my eyes as I am what is known as a ‘glaucoma suspect’ that is, my pressures are too high but so far there is no damage to the optic nerve.
Since my cataract surgery in 2013, my pressures have been lower and I have not required drops in my eyes on a daily basis.
I have more recently had a shift in my metabolism and I unfortunately moved muscle into fat.Layers of fat were added to my body. It did not cause a weight gain but a small decrease in weight as fat weighs less than muscle.
That is LIVING tissue, right there, in my body, now affecting my whole metabolism, my body, my physique. So, you can probably ascertain that when I went to have my pressures in my eyes checked, the pressures were too high.
I asked Dr.K to wait a 3 month span of time to see if I could get my blood sugar levels stable, lose a bit of weight and during that time, eat according to a diabetic diet, step up the exercise, and find, from these efforts the possibility of lower eye pressures.
So, toward that end, I prepared a different supper last evening. And, my companion and I truly enjoyed the meal. It was a combination of chopped zuccini, onion, and mushrooms heated in cooking spray in a skillet on the stove. Then as the zuccini got soft, I added two eggs and let cook a very few minutes, then added shredded cheese.
It was low cal, low carb, and much to my amazement, it gave me a very low blood sugar reading in two hours: 120. I was amazed.
But this morning I felt bad and my blood sugars reflected this with a much higher reading even though I had watched what i had for breakfast. I believe my feeling ill this morning accounted for the higher than normal blood sugar readings.
So, I am planning to beef up my exercise, increasing the time I spend in the gym, and add to the different forms of movement I employ. While I am exercising more, I will focus on getting lower readings on my diabetic routine by eating more like a diabetic, in other words watching what I eat.
Yesterday, I exercised two times. My weight this morning was 2 lbs. down. Good for me!!
I plan on including something of this ongoing struggle in my blog posts. Some of the future readings will be about writing, some on the science of diabetes, and some on the progress I hope to make in my efforts to decrease my eye pressures.

April 14, 2018 Am I exercising as I Should
Exercise helps control blood sugar. It encourages muscles to use more blood sugar. A ride on a bike, a swim, a job around the park, all will allow you to use blood sugar appropriately.
Muscle is lost beginning in our late 20’s and progressing thereafter. This means fewer muscle cells to take up blood sugar and burn calories.
Just a couple sessions a week of strength training will help. A simple routine that works the muscles of your arms, legs,abdomen and back will give you more strength and energy as well as lowering blood sugar levels.
Get at least 30 minutes of exercise daily or 150 minutes a week. If you don’t want to increase the time you spend exercising, try interval training. Walk fast a minute, slow down your walk another minute and on that way, is a good way to increase the benefits of exercise without more time doing it.
You can also employ this technique, namely interval training at any exercise, such as swimming, or biking, or on a treadmill.

April 10,1918 A Summer for Fruit
Summer is fast approaching and even as we are still suffering with cool temperatures, okay, winter weather, Spring and Summer will be here shortly, and with it, the promise of many available fruits.
Mango are a very popular fruit. Several studies suggest that an ingredient in mangoes makes it a desirable fruit to fight against breast and colon cancers. It is also an excellent source of flavonoids which are healthy for your arteries and essential for vision. Very healthy–provides 100% of the RDA for Vitamin C and 35% for Vitamin A.
Peel mango first, may slice and eat as is, It is delicious.
Papaya–contain protein digesting enzymes, which help with digestion, healing from burns and are considered general cleansers and detoxifiers.
Kiwifruit–Add to fruit salads or dishes just prior to serving. Contains Vitamin C and E. Tip: Decorate fruit pies and fruit tarts with Kiwi slices.
Guava–excellent source of vitamin C, good source of Vitamin A and falvonoids like beta-carotene, lutein, lycopene. Contains a rich store of potassium, more than bananas. Helps control B/P and and heart rate. Good source of Vitamin B Complex, Vitamins E and K, and some minerals.
Persimmon–Contains a wide range of antioxidants such as Vitamin A, beta-carotene, lycopene, and lutein. Good source of Vitamin C and B complex vitamins.
Passion Fruit–particularly rich in vitamin C and A. Has antioxidants in the fruit. Is a wonderful source of fiber.

March 27, 2018 Progress on my Writing
I am busy writing my second novel; I have about 42,200 words toward the 80,000 to 85,000 which is my goal. So I am about half way through. This, done in two and a half months, is unlike the way I wrote my first novel, the one that took me seven years to complete. I am pleased. The hard part is ahead however, as I have had plenty of material thus far but I am uncertain if that will hold true for much longer.
March 24, 2018 Kidney Disease as a Complication of Diabetes
Your kidneys ordinarily act as a filter for the blood, removing impurities and waste, But diabetes can slow or even stop this vital process; this leads to kidney failure in 10 to 40% of people with this condition. Kidney failure is one of the leading complications of diabetes, particularly in those who are non-compliant with diet and exercise.
It is true what Mom said: eating your vegetables can keep you healthy. You can keep your kidney’s function running smoothly by taking care of your blood sugar and your blood pressure, thus reducing or eliminating kidney failure as one of the things you have to worry about.
HIgh blood sugar makes your kidney work harder and may damage the microscopic filters inside. Therefore, the kidneys may excrete protein into your urine and if damage is severe enough, waste products could back up into your blood steam–a life-threatening occurrence. This later may require kidney dialysis which uses a machine to filter the blood. Keeping your blood sugar levels stable may eliminate or cut your risk for kidney disease by up to 57%.
Testing your blood each year for microalbuminuria, that is, protein in the urine, this test is able to spot kidney trouble before it is a problem for you, thus giving you time to make changes that protect your kidneys from further damage.
Keep watch that your kidneys may be in trouble, may be failing. This would be borne out by fluid retention in the ankles or sudden weight gain. Other symptoms include sleep loss, frequent urination at night, nausea, weakness and difficulty focusing.
If you develop kidney disease, your doctor may advise the following: a low protein diet, avoid anti-inflammatory pain relievers, and getting quick treatment for urinary tract infections.
March 22, 2018 Begin with Breakfast
To avoid those mid-day cravings, start the day with a good breakfast: begin with fruit, add a whole wheat cereal, maybe a protein like a scrambled egg. Hot tea or coffee is fine but try to avoid sugar.
you’ll feel a lot better than if you ate a skimpy breakfast.

According to Diabetes, The New Epidemic, common symptoms of diabetes include:
- Being more thirsty than usual
- Feeling tired and lethargic
- Having cuts and skin infections that heal slowly
- Blurred viision
- Passing urine more frequenlty
- Tingling in feet or fingers
Understanding and recognizing these as symptoms of diabetes is important for millions of people who are seeking diagnosis for the condition known as diabetes.

March 15, 2018 Progress with Novel
As of this writing, I have 32,242 words written for my novel. I still have some research and exploring of genre for month one and completion of an outline for Month two, but I am well on my way toward those three months of writing a first draft. I have gone on Author Learning Center and sent requests for writers I chose to be a part of my Author Circle, thus far, I haven’t heard from any of those petitioned.
March 8, 2018 Progress with Novel
I don’t know if I have made it known, I have signed on with a program called “Book in a Year,” with Author Learning Center. It has had a kick off and it began March 6, 2018 and I am supposed to have a novel in hand on March 6, 2019. The Author Learning Center is supporting me in my effort by providing a number of educational offerings, an Author’s Circle which provides a support system, and deadlines for each month on various functions. For example, month one through three is for preparation: month one doing research, getting an idea for a novel. Month two is for writing an outline and there is all kinds of info about that topic. Then the writing begins. Three months for the first draft and another three months for a second draft or revisions, then plans for marketing and publishing until the end of the year.
I am excited about the project and looking to accomplish my personal goals I will let you know my progress.

March 4, 2018 Progress with Novel
You may be wondering how I am doing on the writing of my novel. I am here to tell you I am making quite remarkable progress: I have written some 27,500 words or about 55 pages. And even better, I have shared it with someone, someone who reads extensively. Her opinion was that it is fast moving, AND that she couldn’t put it down. That is of course music to my ears.
The secret as writers know is in the use of a simple trick: scene/sequel. By continual adherence to this “recipe” for writing, the text has a better chance of being alive and exciting.
And I am quite pleased to tell you that I have signed up with a group to which I belong, Author Learning Center, for an offering that I know will be of benefit to me.:They have a program called Book in a Year, and I am to be a part of this exciting program. Author Learning Center gives support, guidance and education to writers as they write their book and get it published in a year.
Mind you, my first book took me some seven years to write. Hopefully I will be able to keep pace with this new program. I will be sharing the results with all of you.

March 1,2018 Tips for Better Control/ Avoid Burnout Continued
We are speaking about what to do for the long haul. How to manage your life and your writing so that you do not become burned out and if you do become burned out, what specific steps you may take to remedy this condition.
The following are a continuation from February 28, 2018.They are:
- Spend five minutes each day planning your day. In that plan, include what behaviors your need to care for your diabetes, things like taking a walk or doing aerobic exercise, going grocery shopping for fruits and veggies.
- Recognize your success. Actually write a go to list of what specific things you have accomplished that has improved your health in the presence of diabetes.Things like lowering your A1C, taking a walk every day, getting in a couple veggies every day, things like that.
- Join a support group in person or online. The Diabetic Association at www.diabetes.org and the renowned Center at joslin.org run groups you could join.
- Visualize success. Keep a picture or image in mind that signifies your success. Thinking about dreams and aspirations can keep alive your motivation
- Say ‘no’ to your inner critic.If you hear yourself making negative or disparaging remarks about you and your progress, say NO in a firm, commanding voice.Sometimes this is all it takes to get positive once again.
- Insert a positive message. In the place of negative message, put in a positive one
- Have fun. When was the last time you had fun? If it was awhile, set up a date for something you enjoy, a golf game, a movie.
Try to stay focused on what you are gaining in quality of life rather than looking at the negatives.
February 28, 2018 Tips for Better Control or How to Avoid Burnout
When first diagnosed, you may have all of the motivation in the world on your side; you are interested in learning, challenged to get it right, and maybe you make progress. You master the day in and day out routine. But, after a while, choosing the right diet, exercising regularly, testing your sugar and more may become burdensome. You may get frustrated and that leads to burnout.
This condition is what experts sometimes call “diabetes burnout.” You become fatigued, careless about choosing foods and dietary restrictions, ease up on exercise or quit testing your sugar. You can avoid or overcome burnout. Let’s get going partner, let’s hang in
Tips to consider:
- Remember that you are a person first, not a diabetic, you are a person with diabetes. Diabetes is a part of your life but only one part of a rich and vibrant and rewarding life. Diabetes is something you must account for, but it does not define who you are.
- Talk with your doctor or diabetes education–they may have suggestions to keep from feeling so burdened, easy things ideas that may enhance your care.
- Evaluate your progress. Be as objective as you can: what are you doing right, what are our strong points when it comes to caring for your diabetes. In other words, how are you doing?
- Better control means a better life. It has been proven in studies that those who keep good control of their diabetes have less complications and an easier time managing their condition. They have milder symptoms, feel better, have more energy, and feel mentally sharp, sharper than the other group who have less control.
- Reevaluate your exercise plan. Are you regularly exercising. Do you enjoy what you are doing? Is it helping to stabilize your sugar and at the same time keep your mood stable? Tweaking your plan is helpful, doing something you enjoy for exercise, like dancing or swimming, or joining a baseball team, anything that motivates you and that is fun is helpful.
- Identify specific problem areas. Do you keep stead with your exercise, test your sugar regularly, take your medication as prescribed but are less successful with diet? Me too!! And that is a problem area identified. It can now be addressed. Talk with your doctor, your diabetes educator. Talk with others with diabetes and make adjustments.
- Share with a friend. Studies show that a supportive spouse can help you keep your blood sugar under control. Ask for a hand, for a listening ear when you need it.

February 22 2018 Dental Care for the Diabetic
The following eight steps to prevent gum disease
- Check your blood sugar daily as directed and keep within a specified range
- Have regular checks, cleanings, and x-rays
- Inform your dentist you have diabetes
- Brush your teeth in the morning, after each meal and snack and at bedtime\
- Be consistent about use of dental floss
- Call your dentist if you have bleeding gums, loose teeth, sores, patches or ulcers in the mouth
Do not smoke, if you smoke, get on a program and stop. If you wear dentures clean every day, rinse your mouth and take them out at night
If you have dental implants, treat with the same good oral care as you would if it was your own teeth.

February 19, 2018 Diabetes Foot Care
Many diabetics have problems with their feet. For one thing, many diabetics have neuropathy, where their feet do not pick up sensations easily. Therefore, they are susceptible to infections from wounds that are not discovered early enough. They might not know they have an injury until an infection has already happened.
If you take care of your feet, most serious problems with the feet are avoided.
For foot care, the following is recommended:
- Check your feet every day for dry, cracked and/or open skin, blisters, and calluses.
- Keep feet clean and dry, particularly between the toes
- If feet are dry, use a moisturizing lotion but not between the toes
- Cut your toenails straight across, not in the corners, and file with an emery board or have a podiatrist cut your toenails periodically
- Do not go barefoot
- Wear comfortable shoes that fit well
- Check your shoes before putting on for rough spots and foreign objects
- Always wear socks
- Do not use anything hot on the feet such as heating pads and water bottles. Before getting in a bath, test with your elbow to make sure it is not too hot and run showers as warm not as hot water
- For your visits to your primary care physician, have him check your feet particularly if you are not being seen by a podiatrist
- Also, never a dressing to your skin. Instead, use a self-adhering dressing for your feet and lower legs
Careful care of your feet pays off. You do not want to have an amputation of a foot. Follow direcitons

February 17, 2018 Diabetes: Skin Care
Skin problems ranging from mild itching to breakdown of the tissue to skin infections abound. It is knowing what to do to prevent them and once they occur, to treat them effectively. The following are nine steps to basic skin care:
- Bathe each day with mild soap and lukewarm water
- Pat skin dry with a soft towel and avoid rubbing. Dry between all skin folds
- Treat dry skin with a small amount of lotion
- Avoid getting scratches or bruises
- Wear gloves when there is a possibility of injury
- Use a sunscreen lotion with SPF of 15 or higher to protect your skin from the sun
- Dress for the weather, in winter dress warmly and avoid any long times exposed to the elements
- Wash cuts and scrapes with mild soap and water and cover with a bandage

- February 8, 2018 How Do I Publish A Book
I am going to switch gears today and instead of discussing a medical topic like diabetes which I have been doing, I am back on my favorite topic: Writing and publishing a book. As you may know, I have written a novel and having been seeking a traditional publisher every since, over the last year. Three or so have turned me down as has a local agent.
I took it to a friend to read and she thought it was “good.” and stated that she had read a number of published books that “were not as good as this one.” She said it had suspense, and that she related to it.
But I have learned so much more since writing that book. I have learned various techniques used by professional authors in writing and techniques that make the book a better one. The question is: Do I try to publish as is, or do I rewrite the book? Mind you, it took me six years to get this one done, working only on weekends and some evenings on it.
I posed this question to my instructor in Advanced Novel Writing, a course I am taking online at this time. His comment was that “Great books are often done by a second writing from scratch.” He said also that I had a choice: I could either rewrite the book or I could self-publish.
I have been reading about self-publishing. There are a lot of self-publishing companies out there, most of which are quite expensive and out of my league.They run in cost everywhere from less than a thousand to four or five thousand dollars. One can also publish on their own, and this takes between $5,000 to $10,000.
The instructor I talked to today online, Steve Alcorn, recommended going with Amazon and doing the basic work myself online and then plugging it into Amazon and it will cost nothing. Then Amazon will sell it for me. That way, I would still own the book, I would get more of the profit from sales, Amazon would get their share, and Amazon would make it available for sale and make it also into an e-book.
The downside is that I would have to do all the marketing, if it is going to get done. Which would take time, learning how, and doing.
But it would be published. And there are some benefits to being published, like being able to do paid speaking engagements.
Today I signed up with Author Learning Center for their program they are just beginning, on writing and publishing a book in a year. I will either use this for this book, Journey Toward Healing, or for my new book I plan to write, Journey Toward Freedom.
Today, self-published books, if done right, are seen as almost as good as traditionally published books.
So there is work to be done!! And I am up for it, one way or another. Wish me luck!
February 7, 2018 The Diabetic and Stress
Everyone feels stress some of the time, to some degree. Likewise, it is not just the stress you feel, but what you do with it, what precautions you take to deal with it that may make the difference.
The diabetic, particularly when first diagnosed, is often bothered by stress. Not just at first, but in the ensuing months and years, as the diabetic attempts to care for her/him self, stress may be a factor. Living with this challenge often triggers a flood of emotions. Such emotions as grief, anxiety, frustration, disappointment and stress may come when attempting to deal with diabetes and care for yourself.
Emotional issues may make it harder to take care of yourself—to eat right, exercise and rest. This in turn affects blood sugar levels and makes it hard for us to control our blood sugar levels.
Symptoms of stress include: nervousness, fast heartbeat, rapid breathing, stomach upset, and depression. Stress may throw off your routine and can result in damage to the body. Hormones from stress increase blood pressure, raise heart rate, and may also cause a rise in blood sugar. And this may manifest as tiredness or feeling low. Just so, low blood sugar can result in your feeling upset and nervous.
Things to do to reduce stress include:
- Eat a healthy balanced diet, avoid too much carbohydrate
- Employ relaxation techniques such as deep breathing
- Get on a regular program of exercise. Do something fun. Such activities as dancing, biking, walking, or swimming are all good for reducing stress and getting into the aerobic scene
- Talk to others particularly close friends and confidants about your needs and how you are coping. Talking about problems helps. And it can help to relieve stress
- Keep a sense of humor. Laughing is good for the body
- Join a support group
- Seek out professional help to deal with problems

January 31, 2018 Sick Day Care for Diabetics
If you get sick, say an infection, nausea and vomiting, the flu, a bad cold, or diarrhea, you need to take special precautions because your blood sugar may go up. To stay out of the hospital, you need to take special care of yourself. Consider the following:
- Check your blood sugar every 2 to 4 hours
- Continue to take your diabetes pills and/or insulin even if you cannot eat
- Make sure you are drinking liquids. If unable to take food, drink one cup of water and have one serving of carbohydrate (15 gms.) every hour while awake. Examples of carbohydrate fluids are: 1/2 cup juice, 1/2 cup regular, caffeine free soft drink not diet, 1 cup sports drink, 1 cup broth based soup, 1/2 cup regular gelatin, 1 double stick popsickle.
- If you are able to keep down solids, eat your regular meal plan and drink one cup of calorie free fluid every hour, Examples of fluids are: water, caffeine free diet soft drink, plain tea or bouillon
- Take your temperature
- Check your urine for ketones using special ketone strips. Do this every four hours when awake. If your body is not able to use its own sugar for energy, it will break down fat in the body. When fat is used, ketones can appear in the urine and this may be dangerous
If you require an over the counter edicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist for a list of sugar free products
Call your doctor if:
Your blood sugar is higher than 250 mg./dl or lower than 70 mg./dl two times in a row
There are ketones in your body
You have a temperature above 100.3 degrees
You have vomited more than once
You have diarrhea more than five times or longer than 24 hours
You have other signs of infection, including: sweats or chills, pain, tenderness, redness or swelling, a wound or cut will not heal
A red, warm draining sore
Sore throat, scratchy throat or pain when swallowing
Sinus drainage, nasal congestion, headaches or tenderness along your upper cheekbones,
Persistent dry or moist cough lasting more than two days
White patches in your mouth’
Flu like symptoms
Trouble urinating, pain or burning, constant urge or frequent urination, bloody, cloudy, or foul smelling urine

January 26, 2018 How Can I Prevent or Delay Diabetes?
Diabetes may be prevented or delayed by the practice of the following:
- Lose weight
- Cut back on calories and saturated fat
- Increase your daily physical activity
Think of ways to change the way you eat. Some of the following may be ideas you would like to follow:
- Keep a food log
- Eat smaller portions
- Order the smallest serving size when eating out
- Drink calories free drinks or water
- Fill up on leafy vegetables–start your meal with a salad
- Check food labels and choose foods with fewer calories
- Bake, broil or gril
- Eat more vegetables
Get moving!! Here’s some ideas to try:
- Keep an activity log
- Use a pedometer to track your steps
- Buddy up with a friend for a walk
- Spend more time being active
- Start strength training
- Try a new activity like a dance class
- Get up and move every 90 minutes

January 25, 2018 All about Your Risk for Prediabetes, Type 2 Diabetes and Heart Disease
In prediabetes, your blood sugar is higher than normal but not high enough to be called Type 2 diabetes. But if you do not watch what you eat and have a regular exercise program, your blood sugar could go higher and you could have Type 2 diabetes. This can lead to heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, kidney failure, and eye problems. There is good new though!! You can take steps to delay or prevent diabetes and if you have diabetes, you are able to take steps to prevent those complications.
You can do this by losing weight if you are overweight. You can do this by eating fewer calories and eating less fat and being more active.
What raises my risk for prediabetes and diabetes? You are at risk if you are 45 or older, are African American, Latino, American Indian, Asian American, or Pacific Islander. And other risk signs include having a parent, brother or sister with diabetes, being overweight, and being physically inactive. This is also the case if you have high blood pressure or if you take medication for high blood pressure. And finally, if you have been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.
To find out if you have prediabetes, you may get a blood test to check your blood sugar level.

January 21, 2018 Diabetes Management Checklist
There are certain guidelines that may help you manage your diabetes with an eye for good results. They include:
- Plan your diet and follow a balanced meal plan. See your dietitian at least once a year
- Exercise faithfully at least five times a week. See your doctor first
- Know your medicines and how they work. Keep a record of meds with you
- Keep a log of your blood glucose levels.Take this with you when you see your doctor. Do the check regularly each day and get an A1C at least two times a year or more frequently as ordered by the doctor
- Try to keep within a range with blood sugar levels. If below 70 mg/dl more than once a week, call your doctor. If your glucose is greater than 160 mg/dl for more than a week or if you have two consecutive readings over 300 mg/dl, call your doctor.
- Contact your doctor when your blood glucose is over 300 mg/dl. Test your urine for ketones if ordered by your doctor.
- See your doctor ever three months if on insulin. See your doctor every four to six months if your are treated with other diabetic meds or if you are using diet and exercise alone.
- Have an eye exam (including a retinopathy screening test) at least two times a year or as ordered by your doctor
- Have cholesterol and lipids checked at least once a year
- Have a dental exam every six months
- For any signs of infection,call your doctor
- Practice good foot and skin care
- Try to manage stress as much as possible
- Discuss travel plans with your doctor. Make sure to bring enough meds and supplies with you on your trip. Keep meds and supplies in your carry on bag. Do not check these supplies in case your luggage is lost.
Following these guidelines will go a long way toward preventing or delaying complications of diabetes

January 19, 2018 Symptoms of Diabetes
You may know when you have diabetes. It is simple: an excessive thirst, tiredness and lethargy, slowly healing skin cuts, blurred vision, passing urine more frequently, tingling in feet or fingers.
The tiredness comes from not being able to get the glucose into the cells where it produces energy for the body. The polyuria is a result of glucose levels in your body beginning to rise and the body tries to get rid of the excess glucose by filtering it out through the kidneys. And the thirst comes from losing the water in urination.
Diabetics are three times more likely to have high blood pressure, obesity or elevated cholesterol. This may cause atherosclerosis, a build-up of fatty material in the blood stream. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world.
Simple measures that are health-giving allay the risk of heart disease in diabetics include eating right, exercise daily , and losing weight if overweight.
Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure in adults in many countries. Diabetic clients should have a urine test once a year to make sure kidneys are functioning properly. Diet, exercise and medications are recommended to forestall this condition.
Diabetes may lead to the loss of a limb. Amputation is the treatment for blood vessel blockage in the legs. This condition is called peripheral vascular disease. Bypass surgery often is used to relieve this problem but even so, there are an increasing number of amputees due to diabetes.
Tips for saving your legs include:
- See a podiatrist every six months for a routine check. Many people with diabetes see a podiatrist frequently for cutting of toe nails.
- Wash and dry your feet each time you bathe and include drying between the toes.
- Inspect your feet everyday for cuts, abrasions, and change in color or swelling. Report changes to your doctor
- Check shoes for pressure points, rough edges and general comfort. Use supportive shoes.
- Wear some type of footwear inside and outside the hosue
Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness for those under 60. Have annual diabetic checks of your eyes when having an eye exam. Appropriate treatment can stop the damage and loss of vision.
Nerve damage, known as neuropathy affects a large number of diabetics, about 50% of them. Common symptoms are tingling and numbness in the feet or hands. Nerve damage may be lessened or stopped by adhering to proper diet and exercise and keeping good control of your blood sugar levels.
Infections of the vagina, bladder, and kidneys is common. Here too, adherence to the five point plan in which diet and exercise are maintained will help forestall infection.
Diabetes hits the immune system, teeth and other parts of the body. Diabetics are three times more likely to die of complications from influenza or pneumonia, according to the US Center for Disease.
Dental hygiene is a must and seeing a dentist regularly is wise.
All complications of diabetes are prevented or stalled by adherence to the five point plan, namely eating healthy, losing weight if needed, and adequate exercise.

January 17, 2018 Start the Day with Exercise
I have mentioned exercise previously but exercise is so important for the diabetic that it bears more attention.
Exercise burns calories thereby helping with weight control. But it does much more than that: By burning calories it improves the efficiency of digestion and the conversion of food into energy. It also makes your body’s insulin and diabetic medications more effective.
Exercise should be vigorous or moderate in nature; it should make you puff slightly and be hard to talk while you are exercising. It should make you sweat. By doing 40 minutes of this type of exercise five days a week, you will maintain the benefits of exercise on the body.
Exercise, for some people, is best done in the early morning before their activities for the day begin. For others, early evening may be a good time, especially if going to work is an issue.
Good walking shoes and light, comfortable clothing are advisable. Walk out of doors if possible but if the weather is bad, a walk in a mall would be preferable to not walking at all.
The type of exercise depends on your preference. Try to do 20-30 minutes at least of aerobic exercise such as vigorous walking or biking, swimming or jogging. Then, every other day, a program of weight training would be ideal. If you are trying to lose weight, then more like 60-90 minutes is necessary five times a week.
It is not hard to incorporate a program of exercise in your daily
activities. The best advantage is that blood sugar levels are affected. A1C’s are improved by a simple exercise plan.
Along with your diet plan, the exercise program you choose should have achievable
goals and be rigorous enough to provide health benefits.
January 13, 2018 A Five Point Plan
A five point plan to “prevent, delay,or manage type 2 diabetes:
- Achieve and maintain healthy body weight
- Get 30 minutes of exercise five days a week for at least 30 minutes. More is required for weight loss.
- Eat a healthy diet of between 3 to 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day and reduce sugar and saturated fat intake
- Do not smoke, avoid tobacco
- Get checked by a doctor regularly and have a team of doctors and medical personnel if you develop diabetes
It is, as you may see, not easy but it is simple and able to be followed.It requires permanent discipline and overcoming frustration. The rewards however are great!!!

Diabetes may rob you of anywhere from five to twenty years of life. And following this simple plan may provide you with not only more years to live, but a healthier life free of many of the complications of diabetes.Not only that, but following this plan will prevent or forestall a host of other diseases.
It is mainly up to the individual–to follow the plan. As the author of the book writes: “Never before have such massive savings in medical death and injury been under the control of the patients themselves.”

January 10, 2018 What to Eat as a Diabetic
The food industry is one of the largest industries existing in our world. They attempt manufacture delicious foods that every one will want to buy. Most of the difference in foods and how tasty they are has to do with sugar, salt, and fat.
Diabetics should eat as little packaged and processed food as possible. Reading food labels is a must. Avoiding high salt products (over 400 per gram per gram) is important to consider when making food selections and/or in cooking and preparing a menu.
The food industry is now getting smart and researching and trying to produce healthier foods. The bad news is that many low sugar products have increased amounts of fat, and low fat means more sugar in the food.
Going to the supermarket and perusing the aisles, you find many products labeled “Cholesterol free.” and this may be misleading as only animal foods contain cholesterol. Look for oils or margarine that is free of transfat and less than 10 percent saturated fat.
Reduced fat and reduced salt is often on the label but this too is misleading: even though the product may have less salt or fat, that does not mean that it is low in either of these items.
94% fat free sounds good but it is higher than the legal threshold for what constitutes a low fat product.
So you can see there is a lot to learn about menu making before a real diabetic diet is achieved.
And if you haven’t noticed, no sugar labels especially on ice crams do contain a bit of sugar, so that must be factored into the diet.

January 9, 2018 The Numbers When it Comes to Diabetes
Diabetes is the epidemic of the century, says Michael Smith in “Diabetes, An Epidemic.” There were more than 380 million diabetics worldwide in 2014. That is more than 8% of the world’s adult population. And it is going higher, and projected to be 10% by 2035. Smith says that diabetes is killing 5.1 million people per year. Most of these deaths are attributable to complications of diabetes and that is only a part of the picture. Millions more suffer chronic problems, also complications, that cause debility and is a cost problem. The cost of treating diabetes in 2013 was estimated at US548 billion, that is about 11% of the total money spent on health issues. There are also half of the 400,million with diabetes who do not know as yet that they have diabetes. And there are another 320 million with impaired glucose tolerance.
Along with the diabetes, obesity rates have risen. In 2006, of the 1 billion overweight people in the world, 300 million were clinically obese. The Wold Health Organization estimates that obesity is killing 2.8 million people a year. One unsettling problem today is that the majority of those experiencing diabetes and obesity are younger today than they were a generation ago.
Just a generation ago, families in the US ate three meals a day and if they had something else, it was a treat. Today, our modern conveniences allow for eating any time night or day, whether it be out of our own refrigerator, or in restaurants or fast food places. This is a major factor in raising diabetes and obesity levels along with such factors as less manual labor, more automobile use, and even such things as air conditioning and heating.
Much of this rise in rates of diabetes, obesity, and even heart disease has happened in places where the lifestyle and dietary changes have been the most sudden, particularly China and India. Nearly 15% of the Chinese population is now overweight with a big chunk of that coming from eating animal sources of food.
The solution will not be a magic bullet. It is only personal action that will reduce the numbers we are discussing. Recent studies have shown that the path to health for diabetics is similar to that of those with obesity, with heart disease and other diseases: namely eating fresh foods, eating healthfully, and having a good lifestyle.

January 7, 2018 Keeping Muscle and Avoiding Fat
I have been getting fatter! I have not gained any weight but guess what? My muscles are turning to fat, right in front of my eyes. Toward that end, I have begun weight training, and I love it. I always did a bit of weights, you know, in the evening while watching TV, I would get out a 5 pound weight and work on it during intermissions. Well, now, I am seriously into it. I already go to the YMCA most days to bike, sometimes to swim, so now, I move on to the weight lifting and weight machines and work out. I have found it fun and challenging.
Weight training is good for you it helps keep muscles toned. It strengthens muscles and tendons, it helps to improve weight, and I hear it helps with balance as well, something I am interested in.
The key is staying safe. Do it no more than every 48 hours. Start with weights that cause you to have trouble lifting the last few times you do it. If it is too heavy it could cause pain or damage. Begin with one set at a time and work up.
I will let you know how I fare with it. Do you like to lift weights? What kind of exercise do you find enjoyable? Are you exercising regularly, that is important you know, to exercise regularly. January 3, 2018 Exercise is More than Movement
It helps to exercise. It is that simple. It helps in many ways, from building tone and keeping muscle, to energy and alertness, to helping the diabetic to keep their numbers down.
There is no right way to exercise; there are many ways. I prefer biking, swimming and weight training. Someone else may want to walk, as that is very popular these days.
Weight training helps tone muscles. Aerobics helps build up resistance, get our heart rates up. All these things are needed and more.
Just be sure to find a way that is good for you and do it consistently. Tell me how you exercise. Do you head for the gym, or hike out of doors? Do you think it is necessary to have the right clothes for exercise or are you in your sweat pants always? Let’s have a conversation about it. Thanks.
December 26, 2017 The Knitty–Gritty of Writing
I am currently taking a course on writing caled: Writing a Novel Like a Pro. I am holding off on further writing of my book as I learn principles needed for this writing. I would like to think that I could make my second book even better than the first.
In the meantime I am catching up on my other learning offerings including the Author Learning Center and the videos and podcasts that are presented. .

December 15, 2017 On Writing and Publishing
I have just completed the reading of a book on self-publishing by Amy Collins, entitled “The Write Way;’ Everything you need to know about publishing, selling and marketing your book, and a second book on writing, by Cathy Fyock and Kevin Williamson, “On Your Mark,” From first word to first draft in six weeks. I have learned that the average number of books sold by any author is about 500 copies, with a very scant few who sell a lot of books.. Not a very good average.
Collins details exactly the steps that go into self-publishing a book, from manufacturers of books like Amazon and IngramSpark to the use of wholesalers to POD to the making of an ebook. She states that a book that is self-published, to do it justice, you need about ten thousand dollars!!! (ebooks are cheaper).This includes finding the appropriate person or groups to help with marketing and advertising.
Collins goes on to say that not every author of a book should be published and that it depends on a number of factors, including money. Indeed, self-publishing a book is not for the faint-of-heart.
I am planning to go back to attempting to get my book traditionally published, as difficult as that may be. It is a plan to find a home for my creative writing.
December 8, 2017 A Diabetic Dinner
One of my favorite and very simple dishes is Skillet Pork Chops by the American Diabetic Assoication in their book “Quick and Easy Diabetic Cooking.”
Needed is 4 pork chops (8 ounces each and well trimmmed) 1/4 tsp ground cinnomon, 1/4 tsp. Salt, 1/4 tsp pepper, 2 Tblsp butter, 2 medium onions cut into 6 wedges, and 3 medium carrots cut into 3 in chunks. Season both sides of the pork with the cinnomon and salt and pepper, in a large skillet melt the butter over medium high heat, brown the pork chops for four to five minutes on each side, / add the onion and carrots to the skillet/ reduce the heat to low/cover/ cook for 25 to 30 minutes or until the vegetables are tender and the pork chops are cooked through. Serve the vegetables with the pork chops.
It is a simple dish but well seasoned and tasty.
Exchanges: 4 lean meat/ 2 vegetable/ 1 Fat
Calories: 319/ total fat 15 gm. / carb 10 gm. ENJOY!
December 7,2017 Getting It Right with Diabetes
Despite the fact that I fail to keep within limits sometimes, I do attempt to watch what I eat. I have some unique dishes that serve me well and keep my numbers down. One of these is my apple and celery dish.
I chop apples, celery and onion, put a bit of cinnamon on it, or lemon juice and voila, I have a side dish that is tasty and legal. The cinnamon is tauted to bring down blood sugar levels as is the lemon juice..
Another meal that serves me well is a sunny-side up fried egg and a piece of dry toast. I like this dish for breakfast, it satisfies me, is healthy and keeps my numbers down.
And who doesn’t like no sugar, no fat chocolate pudding prepared with skim milk and topped with ready whip.Nothing wrong with that. It is delicious.And low carb.

My Lost Love, Food–or is it?
Today I would like to discuss a topic that I am personally interested in (not that I am not interested in all I write about) and this topic is Diabetes. I have diabetes and I hate to admit it but I am not too successful dealing with it on a day-to -day basis. What I mean to say is: I don’t treat myself like a diabetic.. I eat pretty much what I want, within reason, I go barefoot around the house (don’t do this, it is a bad idea) and I go for spells without checking my blood sugar.
As you might guess, I run into having a blood sugar of over 200 some evenings after supper. For those of you not diabetic, I am sure you know that diabetes is a problem with insulin, and the utilization of sugar in which insulin is unable to get sugar into the cells of the body. The sugar piles up in the bloodstream and you have hyperglycemia.. This then causes problems with our health including a wound not healing, or having excessive thirst, hunger and urination.
Hyperglycemia may cause serious problems such as the need for an amputation of a limb, blindness and eye disorders, heart disease, kidney disease, and more.
I just had a discussion of this topic with my primary doctor: He said I was well regulated. How could this be, you ask,, considering my lax approach? He points out that my A1C is below 7. (A1C is a compilation or average of blood sugar numbers over a three month period.)
Now he and I have a difference of opinion: He sees the number 7 as the dividing line between regulated and non-regulated. I see the evening sugars over 200 and wince. I know I am responsible for changing this and getting on track, and to give myself credit where credit is due, I do make an effort. Just not consistently.
And I am writing an e-book for other diabetics who have a difficult time being compliant.
My one saving grace is that I do exercise and do it regularly. Almost every day in fact, I trundle over to the YMCA and bike for 30 minutes or longer. And some days I swim. Other days I lift weights. This is the secret behind my A1C level being satisfactory.

Continuing to write my second book. I have followed the advice of a member of Author Learning Center who gets up at 5 a.m. each morning and writes for two or three hours before the house awakens. I am using that time as well to write and it is paying off.

Another BUSY week. I have been able to write almost three chapters on my new book,: over 6,000 words. I am pleased. Today is the day after Thanksgiving. Hope your Thanksgiving was a day of true thanks, filled with family visits and friends. I am thankful for my freedom, my faith, and my health. I am thankful I am able to create a book, and that I have two wonderful magazines for which to write.

I have been REALLY BUSY!! I am working on finalizing my first book, and considering how to get it published. The Cincinnati and Hamilton County Main Public Library has a Makespace, a department that helps clients with all sorts of creative projects. They helped me create the cover design for my book.
They are wiling to help me format the book. Isn’t that wonderful? And of course they could help me with a real design for my cover. I have an interview coming up with an author who just self-published her second book, I’ll let her tell you about it, but I am wanting her expertise on the topic of self-publishing. So tune into me next week, I’ll have the interview.
And I have been busy listening to informative podcasts and videos on the Author Learning Center. Some of their information is invaluable.
And I am doing an article for Living Well 60plus on “Getting It Right as a Senior.” I am doing three interviews with seniors for that article.

I had an interview with an author and business person, Cathy Fyock, The Business Book Specialist, 4725 Brownsboro Gardens Dr. Louisville Ky. 40241 firstname.lastname@example.org regarding her podcast on Author Learning Center. She talked about creating a stir and excitement for your soon to be published book before it is published. Some of her ideas included: creating a mock book cover for your book and advertising on your web page and on Facebook, Twitter, etc. Also, make a One Page and talk about your book and about yourself to advertise to clubs and media.
She said it is important to “talk up” your book, create a stir for it right away, right from the beginning.

I have been ultra busy this week I worked at the polls for election day and that was challenging as it was from 5 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. I wrote the first scene and sequel for my second novel, Journey Toward Freedom. The story line is not quite set but when I know more I will share with you.
This week I made up a mock book cover design. With the help of a church friend and a trip to the main library, I was able to accomplish that task. I am posting it on my web site, here, and on Facebook and probably Linked–in.
I have also been exploring the world of self-publishers without much success. I was approached by one self publisher, but it was for sure too expensive for my budget. Toward that end I have applied for a number of grants for writers.

In the writing world, it is all too difficult to get a book published. It has been made easier for some now that self-publishing is more accepted but for those who do not have the funds for the cost of self-publishing, it remains an arduous task./And likewise, getting a novel published by a traditional publishing company by a first-time writer is equally difficult. I have sent my novel to a few publishers thus far but to no avail. I sent it to a local agent but she turned me down. My novel is now in the hands of another publisher to see if they will accept it.
In the meantime, I am busy sending out queries for magazine articles, and learning more about the art and science of writing.

That last publisher turned me down as well. I have heard some interesting things this week: some self-publishers will format your book for a set amount of money, and create a cover for set amount of money. I don’t know what other costs there are after that, but I am looking into it. It also costs money to have it professionally edited.
My book is about Rose Marie Benedicta Malloy, a 30 ish, single woman, who is Director of Pinecroft House of Peace in Cincinnati Ohio in the late 80’s. Her sister is emotionally unstable and Benedicta is trying to look out after her. The sisters are the target of a perpetrator who is sending anonymous harassing calls and eventually the perpetrator of minor accidents. Finally, there is a serious accident and Benedicta is injured. Later Brie, the sister, is kidnapped, and Benedicta is instrumental in her being found.
The story is intended to make a statement about depression and mental illness. And to model a Christian life. It was written out of my love for the spiritual, my own emotional problems years ago, and my desire to make a positive impact in my world.
Now, I am planning my second novel, a sequel to the first. It is a story of Lulu, the massage therapist at Pinecroft. I haven’t quite worked out the story line but I will let you in on it when I have it finalized.
I have been working on pre-publishing advertisement for my book,Journey toward Healing. Am attempting to put together a book title page, the book cover, which I will use here on my web site and in other places I want to promote my book. It is slow going as I know so little about power point and that is what it takes to get the job done.
I am also working on my story line for my second novel, but that is is infancy stages as yet.

Good news!!! I had contacted an agent about taking my novel, and I heard from her today and she wants to see my synopsis and first three chapters. I just completed a remake of a synopsis so I am prepared for her. I will send it tomorrow. It doesn’t mean because she is willing to review those documents that she will take me on, but it is a first step. Many times, that is as far as the evaluation goes. And the agent does not always take on a writer, particularly a new writer.

It has been a bad day. Lost sleep last night, a tight schedule that didn’t quite fit today, but the day is almost over.
I am taking a course with ed2go on Making Money and I love the course. It has been informative and motivating; I have completed my proposal for my novel and a proposal for a non-fiction book I have in the works. I am now planning the next course I will take.
And I have been getting up at 6:30 a.m. to work on my writing. I am still arranging that to suit me, but I am getting up. I am on the Author Learning Center to give me added help and motivation and it also has been informative and inspiring. That is where I got the idea to get up early every morning.

Busy writing query letters and submitting to magazines. It is difficult to find new markets but I have amassed a number of magazines in the past couple years and it is paying off.The writing class is exciting and at times oft-putting. I wrote an essay that has merit and I am sending it to The Sun. We are being urged to write a proposal for the novel I am doing and a proposal for the non-fiction book I wish to write. Both are difficult to do.
July 28, 2017 Where does time go? I cannot believe I have been away from my blog for so long. For any followers, I will try to do better.
I have a progress report for you on my writing. Since the holidays, my focus has been off of my writing. But I decided to take action: I signed up for another writing course with ed2go.com and I am so enjoying the class. I am here to report an upswing in my energy, a flow of ideas and an improvement in my writing. Plus I am on now with the author learning center and that is also motivating.
My sugar consumption and weight are not so good. I hope for a better report for you shortly.

Again, a long time between messages. And my message today is quite similar to that of January, with my concern over sugar being uppermost in my mind. It is Lent, and I have given up sweets for the duration but have fallen by the wayside too many times. Officially, I am off ice cream, cake, pie, cookies but having some sugary products like canned peaches, fresh fruits, yogurt with some sugar.
Today is a Salmon with veggies day and I don’t even have to cook it. I have found, much to my chagrin, that I am losing muscle and that my arms and legs as well as my torso, have more flabby tissue. I am starting to again, be consistent about going to the Y, dong at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise and at night, when I watch TV, I am doing weights.
When I worked during the Christmas season, I did not make much money but the major thing that happened was that I lost my focus on writing. I am now actively working on my writing each day and trying to get back to that as my focus.
Too many other things are competing for my attention: weight, food, money, looking for a job, debt are the major areas of concern. Right at the moment, my chief task at hand, is getting fit again, losing some weight, and preparing meals that are helpful in loss of weight.

Is it really five months since I have last entered a statement to this blog?
Things have been changing and I have been finding life a challenge. We lost our rental house in September, much to our surprise and chagrin, and elected to purchase a condo. It was our first time at home buying. The move necessitated that I make a bit more money than I was bringing in; I worked a seasonal job, October through December at Honey Baked Ham. I was their Corporate Gifting Associate and spent my time there on the phone and computer, taking large orders from businesses in town for hams for Christmas.
Honey Baked Ham,if you have never had one, is a delicious treat. Way to go Honey Baked Ham!!!!!
Now I am back to job hunting. And, of course, am working on my writing. I am looking for a publisher for my novel, “Journey toward Healing,” and it is a slow, arduous process. I have also, as I have shared with you, begun two other works: my e-book on Diabetes, and my book on Depression.
The problem is that I see clearly, that to be successful, I must accept the challenge to get my “food” right, lose weight and get situated on a diabetic diet. That is necessary whether I write the books or not, but doing so would give the books credence, in my opinion.
My present food habits are bad: toast for breakfast, more bread for lunch with cheese or something, and a high carb diet in the evenings. The evenings are the worst. I eat from the evening meal until bedtime, snacking on sugary products like ice cream. It is no sugar, reduced fat ice cream but still…….. and yet, it has not been on my radar to do the hard work of abstaining from sugar products. How am I going to do this I ask?
I have a secret weapon though. It is God’s grace. I have this belief that if I begin, even if it is a failure and not done properly, that in the long run, God’s grace will come through and I will be able to accomplish this most desired effort. But as usual, God acts more slowly than I would want. I am in a hurry for Him/Her to respond, and that is just not happening.
So, I limp along, every morning swearing that this is my day to do it and failing by the afternoon. I have not given up though. So stay tuned for my future with this desire to get it right.
Getting an E-book Written August 11, 2016
A while back I took a course on Writing an E-book with the intent of putting that on Amazon, and the course came with instructions on doing just that. The course, in case you are interested, it is a relatively inexpensive course, is through ed2go.com/pcc/ under the link publishing. The course taught you how to elect to self publish by doing all the work yourself, so that in the end, you get 70% of the royalties. Or, you can let Amazon do its thing, and you collect a smaller amount of the royalties. Neat!
I am now putting together an e-book on Diabetes with the slant of: What to do in the long haul if you tend to be non-compliant with food. I know I have this problem and I suspect others do as well.
I have an expert in mind to interview for the book.

On my Writer’s Conference
I attended Midwest Writer’s Conference during this month of July. It was easy to ;handle, and there was a wealth of information, many writing buddies to converse with, and a good time to get away.
One thing I came away with: It is imperative to write each day. If you write a page or two each day, at the end of the year, you will have a book ready. And it keeps you sharp and practicing your writing.
Now I am home with a list of goals in mind for the short term and the long term:
1. Establish as a priority completing the revisions on my novel
2. Send my novel to a few small publishing houses for perusal
3. Work on diabetes ebook
4. Interview experts for the topic of diabetes
5. Go to Weight Watchers and practice my food plan, exercise and losing weight in preparation for finishing the e-book on diabetes
6. Do research on my third book, on Depression and Anxiety
My Goals in Writing
July 4, 2016 Wishing anyone coming to this site today, a Happy Independence Day.
I am being pushed these days: I have edits to do on my novel, to make it a second draft. It is taking time, and there are a few rewrites on it as well. The Midwest Writers’ Conference comes the last week of July, and I would like to take my novel to the conference fully edited. I don’t know if that will happen or not. And I must come up with a title for the novel.
I am also working on an e-book on Diabetes. It is in the revision stage at this point. And I have completed a course on how to publish an e-book. I want to approach the work from the perspective of someone who has real difficulty remaining compliant on the diet and exercise needed to care for their diabetes. Toward that end, I plan to interview three “experts” and perhaps interview a couple of individuals with diabetes.
And I have a third book in the making on depression and anxiety which is part memoir, part history, and part didactic.
But for now, the novel takes precedence.
There is a real debate raging about whether non-traditional publishing, that is, self-publishing is a viable type of publishing. More and more people are turning to self-publishing to create their work. Yet the traditional community hardly recognizes them–unless they rack up large sales figures.
And there is a down-side to traditional publishing as well. Often, the money cannot be made in traditional publishing. If there is an advance, and that is an “if” it is usually small and there do not follow any royalties. Quite depressing. And it is a slow process to be traditionally published, often it takes time and effort.
A Brief Personal History
All of my life, I have loved to write. In first grade, I wrote a short article for the eighth graders school paper. By the time I was in high school, I was editor of their school paper. In college, there were of course, the usual term papers and research papers to write.
I had a crisis in senior year, when I declared that I could not write a paper as a summary of care for a young patient whose care I was in charge of. Finally, after much laborious work (and sweat and tears) I wrote that paper.
I was an RN all of my life, and there was limited time for writing. I did do great interviews for admissions of patients to the hospital, and of course, I wrote my nursing notes. And I kept a journal most of those years.
I had a major depression as a young adult and writing helped me to heal from that experience. Writing taught me to have a better perspective when everything was going wrong, and writing taught me when not to take something so seriously.
In 2009, in retirement and faced with extra free time, I took a number of courses at UC in writing and publishing in adult education. I also, at the same time, began taking online courses in writing, publishing and creative writing. I did it on Ed2go.com/pcc/ The courses were a minimal cost as contrasted with some of the very expensive ones out there.
The first class I took online was The Craft of Magazine Writing, with Eva Shaw. It sold me on writing for magazines, Eva became a mentor of mine, and in the next three years, I was either taking that course, or one of a group of courses taught by Eva. I also took several courses on novel writing and mystery writing and began writing a novel.
The course at UC led me to a writers’ support support group in which I have continued and which is led by Wendy Beckman, the instructor and a professor at UC that I had in classes.
In 2010-2012, I wrote and was published numerous times in a local magazine, Infinity Magazine. I was just beginning to get my feet wet. In early 2012, I published an article or two in Diabetes Health and again in early 2013, I was published in Diabetes Health. In late 2013, I became a staff writer for Health & Wellness Magazine, and then I was a little later, made a staff writer at Living Well 50Plus.
In 2012, I began Omega Writing Group as a business, and assumed ownership of the company.
In the last year and to date, in 2015, I have had several articles published in Today’s Christian in the Mature Years.
While this was a natural progression of my writing, the reality was that it took a lot of effort sending out queries before being published at all.
Today I specialize in medical writing and related topics as well as writing in some more general areas of interest.
I have been challenged and rewarded with my writing and work every day on my business and writing.
On Writing for Commercial Purposes
While I have had numerous successes as a result of my educational efforts and personal work to become published, there was a certain degree of major effort to account for my personal achievement. It is very difficult to get published at all. I feel very fortunate that I am allowed to publish two or three articles a month in the two magazines in which I am a staff writer. Not every one is so blessed.
The average amount of money made by full time freelancers is between $25,000 and $40,000 per year. While that is not a great deal of money, I would be more than happy to make that much money at writing. It is one of my personal goals.
I have devoted myself to medical writing and the occasional general interest article. And to pursuing the publishing of a novel. I now see that the chances of making a good living at continuing on this career path are slim. I am thinking of branching out into copywriting. In the months to come, I will take a course on ED2GO, on this type of writing and I have invested in a number of books on the subject. According to the writers of these books, good money can be made by pursuing writing in this vein.
I am considering doing copywriting part time and writing novels and my freelance article writing when things are slow and/or during part time.
Thus far, my expenses including ink cartridges, paper, books, magazines, conferences, and all that it takes to run a business of writing is costing me more than I am earning. My goal is to make a profit doing what I love doing.
In coming remarks in this section, I will comment on my efforts to freelance by copywriting.
Writing Queries as Proposals of Articles to Editors
In my class on The Craft of Magazine Writing, one of the major points of emphasis is the writing of effective queries to editors. Only when the query is a smart, sharply defined one, does it stand a chance of getting the editor’s notice at a magazine.
As I have already mentioned, it is difficult to get published, and one of the things that insures success is wonderfully written queries. The query must have a clever, or attention getting hook, that is the introductory remarks. The middle of the query contains just what the article will cover and must be succinct and to the point. The next section is a short exposition on why this writer is the one to write the article, her strengths, what she has written in the past, anything that would sell the writer. Then a brief closing statement and that is it.
The best way to get frequent and repeated business is to send out a lot, yes, a lot of queries. Personally I am implementing a system, where I spend some time writing a number of queries, then weekly, I send out two queries to ten magazines for perusal. The following week, I send out ten more of those particular queries and ten more of two additional queries and I keep it going like that. Once a month or at a designated time, I check up on the queries that are out, sending an email to the publishers that I have mailed queries to, and asking if they have yet considered the queries I have sent to each of them. It is a way to keep the system active and stands a better chance of being selected to write magazine articles.
Many magazines are listed in Writer’s Market for that year, and I look in this book, for the names of magazines, addresses, email addresses, and send out queries accordingly. Writer’s Market gives the “guidelines” for what the criteria is for an article to be considered at each magazine.
It also is important to read and get a feel for the magazines where you are sending the queries. Each magazine is different in character and tone, and often writes to a different population. For example, Woman’s Day magazine caters to young housewives, while Modern Maturity Magazine has a focus on the senior.
It is also important to go by the guidelines and write for each magazine as the guidelines dictate.

Writing a Novel
Yes, I have been happily engaged in writing my novel for a couple of years. I work on it on Saturdays and sometimes on Sundays, as I spend the work week on my freelance writing.
I am nearing a natural stopping point, and thought I would conclude the novel, and do what is left of the editing, but in adding up the number of words written, I find, I do not have quite enough to count the book as a novel. It is more a novella. I could make it an e-book, these are popular today, or I could add a sub-plot and write a longer work.
I am at this time considering my options.
I will add to this at another time.
Taking Another Course
That is right, I am back to taking courses, only this one is different than the others I have been exposed to. It is on the topic of medical writing. I have only had an initial class, and I don’t know much about the course, I think it is going to be kind of technical. Again, I will apprise you of my progress in this area.

A Class on Writing with Wendy Beckman
I attended a class on writing one Saturday at UC on Victory Pkwy. The class was informative, gave me pointers on getting together a proposal for my novel upon completion, and offered me a review of other writing materials.

Branching Out into Other Interests:
I have decided to spend a little time investing in other interests. Perhaps I will be able to use information from those interests in an article (s). The first effort I am making is in being a volunteer for Catholic Charities. The local Catholic Charities has many different functions, I will be involved with The Refugee Resettlement Program. I will, as planned, work one day a week making out schedules for medical appointments for the Refugees. I have done this work before at Catholic Charities back in 2007 and I look forward to doing some of it once again. I had a particular fondness for the refugees I met there. And I enjoyed the staff with whom I worked.
I have also contacted Recovery Center, a facility that works to educate mental health clients on a number of different areas such as working on computers. The area in which I would want to work is teaching writing. This will not happen until perhaps August.
Back to Writing
In July, I am planning to attend the Midwest Writer’s Conference at Ball’s State University at Muncie Indiana.
Toward that end, I am trying to make progress on my novel. I must write about 20,000 more words. And of course the editing and everything that goes into publishing a book.
Making Progress on Nivel
May is half over, I have made some progress on my novel, about 8,000 words added, and I need about 12 to 15,000 more words. But it is progressing. And I am enjoying it. I took my work to my Writer’s Support Support Group and they thought it to be good.
It takes about 50,000 to 55,000 words or more, to put together a novel. My work up until now has proven to be more a novella. I am targeting another 30,000 to 40,000 words to make 55,000 words.
The last two days I have changed my milieu. I am working at the library and it has been quite a productive time for me. I have written two 600 word articles today, and looked up some books to use for reference for a project I am undertaking. More about that later.
Writing of Queries and Getting Published
It has been about three weeks or so since I have written on this blog due to illness. I am improving each day and ready to get back to it.
I have discussed queries at some length. Queries must be properly written, have a compelling hook, or introductory passage, give a succinct summary of what is to be included in the article. The subject itself must be current, a well thought out topic of interest to some segment or more of the public. Otherwise it won’t sell and the editor will not want it. After the summary, there is a paragraph or so on the writer, her strengths, what publications in which she has written, anything that will say that she/he is the one to write this article. Then a short closing. And of course all the vital info on how to reach the writer must be on this page, either at the top or bottom of the page.
This query will be done in accordance with the guidelines given in Writer’s Market, or guidelines received from the publisher or online on their site.
The query, according to the guidelines, is either sent online with a click of the mouse, to the editor at the proposed magazine, or sent by snail mail. Usually today, online queries are popular.
When emailing the query, it is appropriate to send a couple of “clips,” or copies of articles previously published. The same in snail mail. Of course, if you have not been published as yet, you cannot send copies of previous articles, so it is appropriate to say nothing about previous publication and go right on. Everyone has to start where they are.
I have recently acquired a web site and I have examples of my clips on this site and I am putting the URL in my query in place of clips.
You are most likely to get a reply on email, that you have been selected to write the article, or that they are interested in the article. There is little likelihood you will hear back on email if they are not selecting you, but sometimes you do hear that as well. And when sending snail mail, include a self addressed envelope with proper postage, and it is likely you will receive a reply.
That’s it. And wait to hear that you are now writing the article. Occasionally, or frequently, the editor will ask you to write the article “on spec” which means that you write the article and send it to them to see if they like it, without agreement that they are likely to publish the article. But many times you will get a thumbs up, especially if the topic is a popular one, the writing is great, and you write within the limit of the number of words recommended.
So that is basically how to write queries, and how to get published. Of course, you have to select magazines to send the article to, many of them are in Writer’s Market, or other books giving lists of magazines and their guidelines.
Start by watching magazines in doctor’s offices for off-brand magazines, that is those which are not glossies or those which are not out on magazine shelves and are not the popular ones. You can have an easier time getting published, especially at first if you stick to this type of magazine. Get your friends to give you their old magazines and begin reading a lot of magazines.
When you are selecting magazines to send your query to, it is necessary to peruse the magazine, get a feel for the writing in the articles in the magazine, the word count, the type of articles, the topics, and try to blend in your article with those already in that magazine.

It has been a long time it seems since I have added to this blog and I am going to play catchup today. Because of medical problems I did not attend the Midwest Writers’ Conference and I went on to have surgery August 13. I am in recovery as this time and feeling good.
I have spent some time writing about queries and today I will add to that information in a general manner; selecting a topic is important. Making a list of salient topics that will sell and then writing the queries for the topics is half of the battle. Of course, a bit of research is needed to write the queries. Often times, after submitting the query to a magazine editor, you will not hear back for quite some time and it is quite permissible to send a reminder email, expressing your interest in hearing from the editor, and resubmitting your query. Even then, you may hear nothing at all–unless they are interested in your query and then you hear something back.
In preparing a list of topics, it is often necessary to peruse magazines and see what is of interest to editors. There are two ways to sell articles: first by sending a query on something of interest to the writer, but often times, another way is best, and that is perusing a couple or two or three copies of the same magazine for different months and seeing what topics the editor likes to publish articles about. Determining in what parts of the magazine or what departments, freelance writers are used, and what type of topic is frequently written about, the usual number of words, how the article is laid out, etc. All of this you can ascertain from several copies of the same magazine. Then writing a query based on this information is oftentimes the way to get published.
Of course it goes without saying, that a copy of a query must meet certain guidelines: correct spelling and punctuation, accuracy in writing, and the correct manner in laying out a query are all of importance.

Writing the Article
Once you have the okay to write the article, it is time to do the research on the topic. The internet has made it easy to research many topics but it is a good idea to consider your source when researching. For example, for the medical articles I do, there is a lot of info online but the source may not be such a good one and being selective is important. And there are cites, such as Medzine, for medical topics, where research may be done and that info is more reliable and cites studies as well.
I generally try to bubble a topic at some point and use this as the basis for my outline.
Keeping to the exact length specified by the editor is important. The editor knows her magazine, and she cannot use articles too long or too short, it just would not work.
Knowing your audience is also of importance. To whom are you writing this article to: is it a sophisticated knowledgeable savvy audience or is it for general interest, for housewives, for students, it is important to know at what level you want to aim for .
Please use spell check on your computer but after completion of the article, go back and check for spelling and grammar as the spell check may not pick it up.
In citing dates and numbers, it is of vital importance that these are accurate. No magazine wants to publish erroneous figures. Most magazines will ask you for a source sheet. This is a kind of bibliography of where you got your material and lists the pages for where dates and figures are listed.
When the article is completed, it is a good idea to let it “cool” for a day or two, then read it over again, to see how it sounds and to give a last check for errors.
Then depending on whether the editor wants it by email or snail mail, it is to be sent.
Oh, and I forgot to say that usually, you will be given a contract for the article you are about to write, stating the topic, number of words, the fee for the work, and any other salient information. You sign the document and mail it back to the editor, keeping a copy for yourself.
And then see yourself in print.
That is it.
October 26, 2015 Moving Forward in my Writing
I have been aware that I have not gotten any writing assignments other than my staff writing jobs for the year. One assignment I did receive, was an article on Heart Disease for Today’s Christian in the Mature Years. I had written for them before. But I haven’t been receiving any other assignments.
In analyzing this, I recognized that I have not been getting the queries out there in numbers that would bring writing assignments.
So last week, I began increasing my effort: I looked up in my files, all the listings I have, of general interest and health magazines. I got together a number of the names of these magazines. And I looked up old articles, stories, and queries and sent these out to a few of these editors.
That took the better part of two or three days. This week I organized my card file system for editors’ names and the names of magazines and their email addresses. And I edited a few more queries I have on hand that have not been sent out as yet.
And last week, I reflected as well a little more on why I am not getting published. I had, unfortunately, no one to talk to about this situation. I thought about what I know that my mentor, Eva Shaw, has done in her journey in writing.
And I came to the conclusion that she has written a number of books, nonfiction books, on varying topics. And so has my support person chairman.
So, I signed up last week for another online writing course, this time, one on a topic familiar to me and in which I may be able to tell my own personal story. I signed up for a course on Writing of a Non Fiction Writing. I decided to do a book on Depression and Anxiety. I tentatively want it to be a guide for young people and their families about what to do in the event they find themselves in the situation of a depression and/or anxiety situation and are unsure how to proceed. Or simply want information on another’s journey through darkness and struggle of mental illness. And hopefully my book may assist in healing of the depression as well.
And I have begun the course and made some initial notes for my relating of my personal story. I also have the idea of writing magazine articles about these two topics and advertise my book at the same time.
And at the same time, I am asking my friend, Mike, to edit for punctuation and grammar my novel. He is however, working very slowly, and I may have to do this myself in the end because I want to move on with it at this time.
I’ll be discussing at length my progress on these fronts.
November 13, 2015 The Non-Fiction Book
If you are a freelance writer and sending out queries and wondering why you are not hearing from editors or getting assignments, know that you are not alone; I sent out all of those queries in mid-October but have heard nothing back except for one, which was a rejection.
I have this last month been taking the course on Writing a Non-fiction Book, doing research, sending for books, getting books at the library, and taking some notes on what I am reading. I have also loosely put together three chapters on “my story,” and put together the beginning of the History of Mental Illness.
I have discovered that the notes I would like to have from the doctors in regard to my psychiatric treatment no longer exist. So most of that comes directly from memory.
Interestingly, I got a call the other afternoon from WestBow Press, giving me their sales pitch and trying to get me to publish my novel as an e-book. So I have done some preliminary research on self-publishers; WestBow is a vanity publisher and I am opposed to Vanity Publishing. I do think there are some self-publishers I would be interested in if I go that route.
My plan is to complete the novel by making the corrections that Mike directs, then giving the novel to my support person chairman to edit for the last time (professionally). I plan on going in July to Midwest Writer’s Conference and seeing if I may find an agent/publisher there.
November 19, 2015 Publishing a Book
I am learning a lot about publishing a book.
There are any number of subsidy and vanity press publishers available but most have some poor reviews. I found one, The Christian Faith Publishing Company that I like, they work similar to a combination of traditional and self publishing company. They do marketing as well included in the price.
The cost is an initial outlay of $500.00 then $275 monthly for 10 months. I would have to figure out a way to make the monthly payments. I like them the best.
Create Space is another possibility.
The class I am taking is going along in conjunction with what I am investigating.
I have now four chapters on my non-fiction book and some 12,000 words.

I have all but completed the writing of my novel and will soon submit it to my writer’s support group chairperson for her to professionally edit. I plan on taking the novel to Midwest Writer’s Group in July to look for a publisher/agent.
I have begun work on a non-fiction book, tentatively entitled, Journey Through Darkness. Thus far I have about 38,000 words to date.
And I am saving the money to attend the Midwest Writer’s Conference.
The difference between a novel and a non-fiction book is that a novel must be completely finished before looking for a publisher. With a non-fiction book, it is possible to begin looking for a publisher much sooner, after about three chapters are written and a table of contents has been formed. And it is much easier to sell a non-fiction book, or so I am told.
My next effort will partially be directed at developing a platform for my writing so that once I have a book published, I will have a ready-made audience to whom to sell it.

Happy New Year! It came upon me unprepared. I had a hiatus from this site due to a glitch in the system, but I am back now, and hopeful that the New Year brings welcome changes.
Not so fast on my novel. I found I have to cut and paste scenes together and make some transitions from one chapter to another, so it is not finished yet. I am in the process of doing the cut and pasting, and rewrites and revisions……..again.
But I am well on my way, not so much left that I know I can finish soon, I hope.
The non-fiction book is now at 33,000 words or so. I have completed the memoir section, and am revising and editing that portion. And doing research on the History of Mental Illness.
And I have new topics for the year with my staff writing jobs.
Okay, it is back to the novel for me now. I will write soon.
I find I am so focused on money in my writing life. Because of limited budget and income, every penny has to count, and I spend as much as I make on writing just to pay the bill for ink cartridges for my printer.
That is part of the reason I am writing this non-fiction novel.
I would like to think I have a magnanimous reason for writing, some cause that I could back with my writing, some unselfish goal that keeps me working on my writing from season to season.
Oh, I do wish to write to make a difference, to make a contribution, and to put out there, quality writing and excellent information.
However, the idea of increasing my limited income seems to take priority.
How do writers make money? If a writer is skilled and imaginative, she/he may make money at writing by publishing a book, either a novel or a non-fiction book. Yet, for first time writers, the money here is small in comparison to what well known authors receive.
Commercial writing, either for a business, a conglomerate, a corporate entity, is where the money is. And not every writer has the skills to pull this off, to write for business. And for me, this is not where the heart is, so to speak.
Some individuals continue in their day jobs and moonlight at night as a writer and fare pretty well. Others, like myself, yearn to work full-time on writing and attempt to achieve this goal.
The fact may be that it, like many other businesses, takes a long time to get known and established.
Currently working on paging my novel, coming close to the end.

I have some news. As of the end of this month, the two magazines for which I am a staff writer are being taken over by a new owner. Rockpoint Publishing is the new publisher, owned by Brian and Jennifer Lord. I have never gone through a change of thissort before and do not exactly know what to expect. I have always gotten good feedback on my work as a staff writer. I hope for the best.
I am now finished with this stage of my novel. It goes to my chairperson who will professionally edit it.

Much time has passed since I have last written here. And my novel is now in the hands of the chairman of our Writers’ Support Support Group, and she is currently professionally editing it. MY NOVEL IS ACTUALLY IN COMPLETED FORM. And that is so exciting to me. Much work you may understand, went into the writing and getting the book to this point.
Not only that, but I have now begun work on my second book, a non-fiction book, tentatively entitled, “Beyond Darkness,” which is about depression and anxiety. It is based on my own experience with depression as a young woman and my efforts through the years to get beyond that darkness. I have, thus far, a section on memoir, a part on history of mental illness, some information on different names used throughout history to define and identify mental health clients such as lunatic, a section on depression and related topics as well as another section on anxiety and its related topics. There is more but I will save that for future writing.
The fact is that it is easier to sell a non-fiction book than a fiction book (and I might say it is easier to write as well, at least if well-acquainted with the material.). The two books I have written have a common element, both have some work on mental illness.
When a fiction book is to be sold, it must be completely written before attempting to sell it; not so with a non-fiction book. For the latter, a first, second and maybe third chapter is required, perhaps a table of contents, and a proposal, an outline of the book. Then, it is possible to seek a publisher for the book.
I told you last year that I was headed for a writer’s conference but in the end, because of a pending surgery, I could not attend. Now I am hopeful of attending that conference this year. It is the Midwest Writer’s Conference, held in Muncie Indiana in July.
And I am on my way!! I am all ready, with two books to take with me to find an agent/publisher for the books.
At present, I am reading a book about forming a Writer’s Platform. Will let you know more about that at my next writing.

Happy Days are here again, or so the song goes. And happy days are with me I can tell you. I am taking a course in writing an e-book in a month and am busy not only writing the book, but learning about publishing and marketing it. It may be a bit more than I am able to accomplish, but I am learning a lot.
And I have decided to set up for myself, a publishing company. I will name it, Benedictum Publishing. I am excited about that as well.
The book I am writing in e-book Is on diabetes type 2. I have about half of it in progress but I am stuck for the other half. How do I want to relate to this topic, do I want to write about what many are touting as the ability to treat and be relieved of this disease? Or do I write more about how to care for self and keep blood sugar low.
I’ll let you know my progress as I am able to do more on the writing of the topic.

Wow!! It has been a busy and hectic kind of month, taking this course on a 30day challenge of writing an e-book. I have a book ready but I am not ready to publish and have decided to back up a bit, and reconnoiter. I am going to slow way down on getting the book out; self edit the book, add anything I think is important. And I am taking another course, this time from my old standby ed2go.com in publishing and writing an e-book. I am more confidant I will get the help I need and be successful in doing this.
There is a lot to it: not only writing and editing, but doing all to promote the work, and actually getting it up on create space. It is a challenge for sure.
Writing an e-book on Diabetes Type 2
I have edited the e-book for publication and am adding my own personal efforts in a chapter as well as how to keep constant in efforts to deal with diabetes. It is not always easy, in fact, I, for one, have managed to digress from diet and exercise for at least a year or so. I find my A1C is up, and my cholesterol numbers are all out of whack. So this book is a siren call to myself as much as it is to the reader.
I am also reading material on depression in preparation for the non-fiction book on depression. I am thinking my slant here will be that one does not have to remain depressed and can actually thrive after an episode with depression.
If I could get this e-book up and published on create space, I would be able to add to the numbers of e-books on medical topics that I write and publish. I have thoughts of a series called Health Hints. While doing that, I will be writing my non-fiction book, and perhaps a romance novel as well.

This has been a very busy time for me as I am taking a second course, the first was not that fruitful, and I am learning how to publish and e-book on create space at Amazon. My e-book is on Diabetes and I hope everyone who is diabetic or knows someone who is, will get my book online at Amazon when it is published in a couple of months.
My novel is being professionally edited and remains with my chairperson of my writing group. Her feedback is that she is “enjoying reading it.” I have come to realize that in initial readings, it is important to pick those who are accustomed to new fiction writers or those who are sympathetic to one’s writing, because otherwise, the feedback may not be as good as it could be.
I am speaking of giving my novel to two church members to read; they were very kind and accepted my request for them to peruse my book. One of them read the first few chapters and the last chapter and stated that it was “written well.” The other person, after completing reading it, stated, “You have a lot in it.”
Of course I am anxious to get positive feedback on the book. And it is a risk in selecting whom to have read it at first. Anyway, my chairperson likes it and says, “You did a good job on this,” which is music to my ears.
I am also working on a query and proposal for my non-fiction book on Depression and Anxiety. It is coming along.
For all those writers out there, be sure to get in a writer’s group of some kind; it is amazing how helpful such a group can be, and the feed back is invaluable.

It is a busy time, I am making the final changes in editing on my novel now that the professional editor has perused it. Also in the works is a proposal for me non-fiction book on depression. And I have completed writing of an e-book. I am, as I may have told you, taking a course on publishing an e-book. It is very complicated and I probably will delegate some of the tasks. At the moment, I am formatting for use as an e-book and the task is frustrating. I am having the e-book text sent to my professional editor person who will look at the formatting as well as editing for me.
